So, as the season fast approaches, kill two birds with one stone and make your furry friend an outdoor play and potty area. What you build is ulti- mately up to you — out- door pet areas can be simplistic or extrava- gant. It all depends on how much time you have and how much you're willing to spend. Whatever you build, you need to make sure the pet area is under the cover of shade and your pet has plenty of water. Pet Supplies Plus on North Berkeley Boule- vard sells outdoor water bowls that can hold up to several gallons of water, which will ensure your pet is hydrated during even the hottest dog days of summer. You can grab an enclo- sure, if you want one, from Lowe's, which is also on North Berkeley Boulevard. Lisa Chandler, manag- er at Pet Supplies Plus, said the store carries tie downs and tie ins so you can put your dog on a leash and attach it firmly to a stake in the ground, giving them the freedom to run around if you don't have an enclosure. The store also carries cooling mats that you stick in the freezer, chill them down and then stick outside for your dog to lie on. Chandler recommend- ed putting ice and cold water in your dog's water bowl and sticking it in the shade so it stays cool longer. The shop also sells doggy doors so your pet can come in and out at free will. Toward the start of the summer, Chandler said the store will start carry- ing shades you can put outside and let your pet chill out under on hot days. From there, the possi- bilities are wide open. You can install tunnels for your dog to run through, which can be made of tires, piping material or stone, or keep the area open with several toys and surfaces inside that are comfort- able. Grass surfaces are your best bet, since it will not radiate heat like asphalt or concrete will — your dog's pads are soft, and they should be protected. A neat idea for what is sure to be a hot summer is a turf grass area in the shade that is fenced in and has plenty of bones for your pup to chew and fire hydrants for decora- tion. Or you can take some wood and build modern dog houses. Build three platforms that are con- nected but varying in height, and then use the remaining wood to build houses for your dog to lounge around in. If you'd like to keep your backyard as it is, but keep it fenced in, you can build your dog a dog run. Get a firm material and cover it with artifi- cial turf, arrange it in varying ways and con- nect it to make ramps and jumps, and you have yourself a dog run. If you have a deck, you can build your dog a cus- tom bed to go on it so they can laze around in the heat. A popular way to make your dog a bed is to build a pallet bed. Simply pur- chase two pallets, and break one down. Take the other, lay it face down, and take the pieces of the extra pallet and attach them to the intact pallet to form a border around the bed, and then drop a pillow in it. Stock it with bones and toys and your dog is sure to enjoy it. Pet Supplies Plus car- ries dog toys that can be frozen or filled with spreadable treats to entertain themselves while they are outside. Sometimes, building yourself an outdoor pet area is as simple as fenc- ing in your backyard so your pup can roam the area freely and you won't have to worry about them getting out. Wherever you build it, the most important point remains that your pet should have a gracious amount of shade and water to stay cool during the hot summer. News-Argus/SETH COMBS Pet Supplies Plus Manager Lisa Chandler notes that natural hard rubber chew toys make great additions to any outdoor pet area. Just like children, pets need some quality playtime, too. Create a safe, comfortable place for your pet outside News-Argus/SETH COMBS A gravity feeding pet food bowl can be placed outside, and will ensure that your pet receives enough food without the need to manually fill the bowl on a daily basis. Being outside and playing, your pet needs nourishment to keep its strength up. ■ It can be an outdoor play area with a potty area, too. News-Argus/SETH COMBS An anchored leash stake allows your pet to be outdoors with freedom of movement while remaining tethered to a designated area and is a natural choice for any outdoor pet area. When purchasing a stake, it is important to get one that prevents tangling of the leash so that your pet's range of movement is not hindered. News-Argus/SETH COMBS An easily installable pet door allows your pet to enter and exit whenever he or she feels the need creating more autonomy. News-Argus/SETH COMBS A recycling water bowl ensures that healthy clean water is always avail- able to your pet.
