Thursday, March 16-March 22, 2017 www.rutherfordweekly.com 828-248-1408 Rutherford Weekly - Page 23 The Griffi th Rutherford Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is pleased to announce the School and Chapter (county) winners of the Junior American Citizen (JAC) Contest for 2016-2017. The theme for this year's contest was entitled "Our National Parks: 100 Years of Service to Amer- ica". Students from 3rd through 8th grades in public, charter, private and home schooled situations were invited to enter. The students in grades third through fi fth could choose to compete in one or more contest areas, which included designing a stamp, drawing a poster, writing original poetry, writ- ing a short story, producing a banner, submitting a photo essay or conduct- ing and writing about a community service project completed this school year. Those students in sixth, seventh and eighth grades could compete in one or more contest areas, which in- cluded writing poetry, writing a short story, submitting a photo essay or conducting and writing about a com- munity service project. The annual contest begins in August and ends in early November, with the national part of this contest ending in April. This year the JAC contest re- ceived 693 entries completed by the same number of students from elementary and middle school situa- tions, of those 585 entries were stamp designs. The judges evaluated same type entries at the local school level. Those fi rst place winners were judged against their peers from other schools. (See the results of the School [local] and Chapter [county] judging below.) Recently the Griffi th Rutherford Chap- ter sent, for statewide judging, 10 entries which were completed by 10 students. Again this year the Griffi th Rutherford Chapter submitted excel- lent entries, which included entries in 4 out of 7 categories. Those entries winning fi rst place at the statewide judging level will continue on for judg- ing at the Southeast Division Level. If they win fi rst place there, the entries will go on to National JAC judging in Washington, D.C. We are very proud of all the students who submitted their wonderful entries to the Griffi th Ruth- erford Chapter NSDAR for this year's judging.
