Everything and every human action revolves in rhythm." - Babatunde Olatunji What is a Drum Circle? Part II Have you ever been to Asheville on a Friday evening? You may have been drawn to the tribal rhythms and driving beats on Pack Square Park. All the way across the country, on Venice Beach, the same spirit of music and cooperation ring through the air. A variety of percussion instru- ments, energetic dancers, and entranced onlookers all gather around the drum circle. The djembe (pro. 'jim-bay'), a drum that originates from West Africa, is a staple instrument of the drum circle. Traditionally, this drum is goblet shaped and chiseled out of a large piece of wood. The drum is fi tted with a skin that is attached tightly to the top of the drum with rope. The amount of tension in the rope determines the drum's tone. Tone is a musical way of describing a combination of qualities about an instru- ment including pitch, sound quality, and timbre. Legend has it that a tribe in Mali has a saying that J. Justin Harper originated the name of the djembe, "Anke djé, anke bé." The English translation is, "everyone gather together in peace." Is Shelby ready for a drum circle? There have been some discussions on social networks like Facebook about starting a drum circle in Uptown Shelby outside of Lily Bean Micro-Roasted Coffee, next to Pleasant City Wood-Fired Grille. The potential for our city to accommodate music enthusiasts of all levels (including children) in an outdoor community setting could attract a lot of attention. If this idea interests you email me at: justin@cfmedia. info and we will make it happen one day this fall. You don't have to run out and buy a djembe to participate in a drum circle. You can make your own instruments using household items that may otherwise be discarded. Take an empty bottle and add some beans or beads and tape the lid. Voila! Your very own shaker. Or grab some sticks and a 5-gal- lon bucket. Experiment with different materials to fi nd the tone you like. Let's make Cleveland County the place for music!
