FAYETTEVILLE faces OF LINDA LEWIS is a long-time Fayetteville resident who won her battle with breast cancer 37 years ago. Back then Fayetteville lacked the facilities, treatment and support that are available now. Linda, a young mother of four sons, comes from a family of survivors – three others have also beat the statistics. She underwent massive cobalt radiation instead of chemo which was not as common at that point in time. "Statistically in 1975, it was 1 out of 15 who might develop breast cancer, whereas it is 1 out of 7 today," said Lewis. "I give Dr. Harold Newman the credit for saving my life. It was what I had to deal with and I went through it. I asked a million questions during the treatment." Following her bout with cancer, Linda volunteered with Reach to Recovery for 17 years and did public speaking for women in the Fayetteville and Fort Bragg community promoting an awareness of the disease. Some of her favorite spots in Fayetteville include the Airborne & Special Operations Museum and the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens. The Lewis' chose to plant roots in Fayetteville and have absolutely loved it. She credits the military for sustaining our economy. Linda also has a passion for dogs and has served on the board of the shelter at FAPS for 12 years, since its inception. HUBERT BULLARD is the former Vice President of FTCC, but he is most known for organizing and managing the Cumberland County Fair for the past 14 years. "The fair has grown 1,000% since 1998 and I'm proud of the tremendous amount of cooperation and participation among the different service organizations in the county to include the school system, livestock association, the military, local businesses and volunteers." Bullard shared that the Fair Advisory Committee works well together in harmony to reach the goal of presenting a showcase of the best in the Cumberland County region. Not only is it his livelihood, but Bullard considers it his hobby to organize and promote events. He is involved in dozens of events in the Carolinas and the southeast throughout the year. CARLA SUPPLES was born and raised in Fayetteville. You might not recognize her name, but you've taken joy at her events. Over the past seven years she has been the chair for downtown's Historic Hauntings. Carla leaked to us that this year a new haunted house separate from the event is in the works. When she is not busy with that fall event, she is wrapped up in all things Dogwood Festival. Carla has been part of the planning for the past eight to nine years. She said her favorite part is seeing how the crowds react to all the hard work that everyone has put into each event. With very little downtime, she also plans the Fayetteville After 5 events, spends time with her son and church family. "Downtown has become very vibrant. Just walking the streets, I've seen the transformation in my time here," said Supples. A fun fact about Carla: after all these years as a Carolina resident, she is finally learning how to shag dance.
