He started crop dusting for a Mount Olive company, spraying crops through most of eastern North Caro- lina. Dale also worked for the Forestry Service, first as a part-time pilot flying a T-34 spotter plane during the Feb- ruary through May fire season, and eventually as a full-time pilot in the Fayetteville area where he flew an array of firefighting aircraſt. Being posted to the Fayetteville station eventually brought him to Gray's Creek and the strip of land that allowed him to build his runway within a stone's throw of the family's home. Cindy runs the front office. Dale Dale's newly acquired pilot's li- credits her with the people skills need- ed for that part of the job. She's also been known to jump on a tractor and cut the grass despite triple digit heat. Maintenance of the airport – keeping it presentable and safely maintained – is a never-ending chore. Scott, a 2000 graduate of South View High School, where he excelled aca- demically and as a varsity athlete, said he always anticipated some day being involved in the family business. Scott got his basics in mechanical engineer- ing at North Carolina State University, but leſt before finishing to work in what he thought would be the more lucrative construction industry. While in college he followed fam- ily tradition and also earned his pilot's license, giving him a unique mode of transportation not many college soph- omores enjoy. Coming home, starting a family, and being involved in the family busi- ness seemed a natural transition for him. Part of his workload involves fer- rying planes due for maintenance to and from the airport, which gives him the opportunity to fly different types of aircraſt while earning flying hours. His father, who has been unable to fly since 1987 due to diabetes, said Scott is a great addition to the operation. "He's got that eye. He knows if there's something wrong with an airplane. I couldn't do it without him," he said. For Scott, it's not just a job. "The best thing, it's just fun," he said. CV 66 | September/October • 2012
