In the grief-stricken days following Cy's death, Newell found himself focusing on all of the things that made his nephew the vivacious person he was. Ned Garber credits Newell, his brother-in-law, Cy Garber especially enjoyed being active outdoors and spent a great deal of time engaging in water sports and hunting with family and friends. Whatever was to be done would most assuredly revolve around Cy Garber's love of the outdoors and outdoor sports, specifically hunting, fishing and water sports. "Cy was just a little, quiet guy," Newell said. "We took him everywhere because he didn't get in any- one's way. And he would just be with us hunting and fishing. He killed his first deer there in Sampson County. I just got to thinking that it was such a loss for everyone where we just needed to do something." Whatever was to be done would most assuredly revolve around Cy Garber's love of the outdoors and outdoor sports, specifically hunting, fishing and wa- ter sports. What about an organization that opened up those experiences to youth in southeastern North Carolina? What if more kids could experience Cy's world? Cy's World Newell offered those words up as the name for the organization just days aſter his nephew's death, crys- talizing the idea and giving birth to the foundation. "He kind of played in his own world," Newell said. Said cousin Will Newell in a written remembrance a year aſter Cy Garber's death: "Cy found something that most people spend their whole lives looking for: a way to escape from the stress of school, work, re- lationships, etc. and be at peace for a while. This is what motivated my family to start Cy's World Foun- dation. We hope to introduce youth to those outdoor pursuits that have been such a positive, guiding in- fluence on our lives, in hopes that we can teach them some of the things that I, along with everyone who knew him, learned from Cy." Funding for the Cy's World Foundation was kick- started in 2011 with Cape Fear Sailfish Classic Fish- ing Tournament at Ocean Isle Beach. It was an event Cy Garber had played an integral part in its inaugu- ral year, serving as the competition's weighmaster. "He pretty much ran everything up on the dock," Ned Garber said. Other outdoor and conservation organizations recognized the Cy's World Foundation mission and eagerly got behind the effort to raise money for the charity.
