Ontheair In the second period the Cougars again pres- sured the Spartans on de- fense and hit their 3-point- ers to go on a seven-point run and stretch the lead to 12 before the Spartans put together a run of their own to pull within four with just more than a minute left in the half. The Cou- gars responded, though, to go back up by 12 by the buzzer, 36-24. A 13-2 run from the Cou- gars opened the third pe- riod and the deficit quickly got away from the Spar- tans. By the end of the pe- riod they would trail 59-38. Despite a late rally for the Spartans, there was too much ground to make up and they came away with the loss. Maggie Winning led the Spartans with 10 points, Kylee Kitchell had seven, Lexi Pritchard and Jesse Miller each had six, Al- lyson Drury and Megan Boone each had five, Ca- rissa Twitchell had four and Tyler Ellenberger and Cleo Dufrain each had two. Seniors Boone, Pritchard and Drury were playing in their final game as Spar- tans, but the rest of the lineup is expected to re- turn next season. The Lady Spartans fin- ished the year 13-11 overall and 3-7 in league play. LiveOak59, Lady Cardinals 43 LIVE OAK The Corning Lady Cardinals lost a quar- terfinals match Thursday night to the Live Oak Li- ons 59-43 on the road. The Cardinals beat the Oroville Tigers at home Tuesday night 53-37 to open the playoffs and ad- vance to the quarterfinal. With the loss the Cardi- nals finish the year 16-11 overall, 7-3 in league play. Boys games The Corning Cardinals were scheduled to host the Sutter Huskies and the Red Bluff Spartans were sched- uled to visit Redding to face the Shasta Wolves on Friday night. Results from those games are posted at red- bluffdailynews.com. Girls FROM PAGE 1 CHIP THOMPSON — DAILY NEWS Red Bluff's Jesse Miller goes up for a shot Thursday night against Foothill. "I don't think it'll take much to get on the same page," Bumgarner said. "He watches and he pays atten- tion. He's been around the league. So it does make it easier." Hundley's most impres- sive work might have come later in the game, when he caught two scoreless in- nings from right-hander Clayton Blackburn — a pitcher he hadn't received before. Blackburn, who struck out two, said he only shook off Hundley once. It wasn't dumb luck. Hundley said he knew Blackburn's repertoire be- cause he had requested and reviewed video from all the pitchers on the Gi- ants' 40-man roster in the weeks before he reported to spring training. Some new catchers would prioritize learning the five pitchers in the ro- tation and key relievers. Hundley saw it differently. "He's fighting to make this team, and if I'm in the way of that, it's a detri- ment," Hundley said. "It's my job to make these guys as good as they can be." • Bumgarner walked one and hit a batter while al- lowing two runs in his in- ning. He had the option of skipping Friday's game and having six spring starts in- stead of seven, but said he would rather get going ear- lier and pace himself at the end. "As long as your arm strength is there, that's all you can ask," he said. • Blackburn might be a bit forgotten in camp, with Blach's poised per- formance down the pen- nant stretch as a Sep- tember call-up and Tyler Beede's proximity to the big leagues. Blackburn noted that Beede was com- ing off an ERA title in the Double-A Eastern League. "Last year I think the hype was around me," said Blackburn, who won the ERA title in the Tri- ple-A Pacific Coast League in 2015. "But I gave up too many home runs (last year) and that's the wrong league to do it. Blackburn is Beede's catch partner and sees the movement on his throws. So he understands the hype is warranted. "He's nasty," Blackburn said. "He'll be a No. 1 or 2 starter in the big leagues, and Ty, we all saw him do what he did against the Dodgers. It's all deserved. I watched him do it for three years in the minors." Now Blackburn has to do a little more to put him- self on the radar. He came tantalizingly close to his big league debut last sea- son, even receiving his first call-up, but was sent back without getting a chance to pitch. The Giants didn't bring Blackburn back in September because they had enough pitching and he had some mechanical issues toward the end of the season. Blackburn said he hopes to stay fresher in the sec- ond half this season. In- stead of throwing a dozen times off the mound in the winter, he limited himself to flat-ground work while throwing into a net. "I'm definitely hungry," he said. "It's always cool to get called up, but it's def- initely disappointing not to get in. That's part of the game." Giants FROM PAGE 1 Monster Energy Cup Series. Earnhardt estimated about 90 sponsor or team commitments during the series' 36-race schedule, leaving little room for downtime, family time or me time. "Back in the 70s and 80s, when guys were racing into their 50s, they were run- ning 28 races and had a lot of time off," he said. "They didn't have sponsor re- sponsibilities. Ninety days of work off the track? What was Bobby Allison doing in '83 with Miller? Twelve days off the track, maybe? They had a lot of time to do what they wanted to do to unplug and keep their bat- tery charged." Throw in escalating sal- aries over the last two de- cades, and it should be no surprise to see drivers choosing a less-stressful lifestyle — even with safety advancements making the sport seemingly as safe as possible. Michael Waltrip, a 53-year-old former team owner/driver who has raced a part-time sched- ule since 2009, is making his final NASCAR start in the season-opening Day- tona 500 on Sunday. Vet- eran driver Greg Biffle, 47, announced last week that he won't race full time in 2017. Biffle accepted a re- curring role as a guest an- alyst on NBC Sports' "NAS- CAR America" show. Others might soon join them on the outside look- ing in. So who could be NAS- CAR's next retiree? EARNHARDT The 42-year- old Earnhardt missed 18 races last season because of what he believed to be his fifth documented con- cussion. NASCAR's most popular driver was cleared in December to return to racing, but acknowledged this week that he would consider retiring if he won his first Cup championship in his 18th season. "It'd be hard not to spike the football on stage in Ve- gas and call it a career," he said. "Why not? There's still a lot about it that I haven't done just the way I want to do it. I want to learn how to enjoy it all the way, fully. I've got a couple more years that I'd like to keep going."
