28 eduCation PROFILE: WAYNE COMMUNITY COLLEGE A Pivotal Player in Wayne County's Success Wayne Community College's new president, Dr. Thomas A. Walker, Jr., describes his institution's role in Wayne County's future as "the straw that stirs the drink." WCC will be a "pivotal player." "My vision of Wayne County is that it is going to continue to grow and we are going to be a part of it," Walker said. For nearly six decades, Wayne Community College has been an essential component of the county's economy, training the workforce and providing affordable education. Residents of Wayne County have always believed that their college was a gem. Dr. Walker believes it is time for the rest of the state to know it, too, predicting that WCC will earn its place as the best of the 58 Community Colleges in the NC system." "We are poised, ready, and hungry to do great things here," Dr. Walker said. What is it that sets WCC apart from other colleges? • A history of strong, solid leadership • Talented faculty and staff, many with advanced degrees • Strong partnerships with local schools, other institutions of higher education, industries, businesses, governments, and non-profit organizations • A diverse student body • An impressive workforce-building track record that includes awarding more National Career Readiness Certificates than any other county and a role in the county earning the state's first "Work Ready Community" designation • A tradition of providing cultural opportunities for the community • Commitment to building "not only the future workforce, but the future leaders of this county" • Respect of industries and businesses that look to the college to provide skilled workers and keep the workforce trained • A range of programs that provide traditional skills with a high-tech focus, such as computer-integrated machining, or new twist, like sustainable agriculture, or a simple grounding in the basics, as in the Associate in Arts degree • High graduation and retention rates • A well-equipped, accessible facilities • Commitment to meeting the current and future needs of the residents of this county and the surrounding area Despite what he calls the college's "inherent humility," Dr. Walker says, "Wayne Community College is on the precipice of greatness." 2017 Windows of Wayne.indd 28 12/13/16 7:32 PM
