6 TEACHING LATERALLY I t is Friday afternoon, and Mount Olive Middle School students have fled for the week. The only sound in the large, two-section classroom is the clatter of a 3-D printer. Sitting at a computer station across the room, second- year lateral entry teacher Chantel Moore waits for the printer to complete its task. There were no such printers when she was a student at the school, but lessons learned in that same room encouraged her to get a college degree –– in fact, three. Ms. Moore teaches classes in career/technical educa- tion. "When I was a student here it was totally different," she said. "We didn't have all of these computers. This side was a regular classroom; the other side was like a woodshop room. "My technology teacher at the time, he had like a broadcast system set up where you could edit videos. People could record school announcements and things. You could help work on the school yearbook. That is what made me want to go to school, taking these types of classes." But Ms. Moore, 27, a Mount Olive native, did not set out to be a teacher. She attended UNC-Pembroke and UNC-Greensboro earning bachelor's degrees in political science and jour- nalism, and a master's degree in communications stud- ies. "My plans kind of reversed," she said. "I initially went into communications and writing. Ideally, I wanted two different careers. I wanted to teach last and do writing and communications first. Chantel Moore went to college to pursue a career in communications, but when she graduated she found her niche as an educator. She is working to get her certification through the lateral entry program.
