Please have your funeral home send us your loved ones' obituaries to events@rutherfordweekly.com ©Community First Media Community First Media One of our goals at Harrelson Funeral Home is to not only serve families in their time of loss, but also to be a source of help to our community. We show this commitment by donating hundreds of dollars every year to school booster clubs, church projects, local youth sports teams, civic clubs and charitable fundraisers. After travel- ing many miles around the county, I am sickened about the problem we have with pollution along the roadways of our beautiful county. Litter not only de- stroys the beauty of a landscape, but it also proj- ects the wrong image of the hardworking people in Rutherford County. It is a shame that a small number of careless and indifferent people use our roadways as their personal trash can, while leav- ing others with the task of dealing with their lack of respect. After spending some time thinking about what would be the best solution, I have developed some ideas which will hopefully minimize or alleviate our litter problem. 1) Communicate by using social media and local news outlets about the plight of pollution which plagues our county. Everyone needs to know that we have a serious problem and how widespread it is. Our local government leaders need to and should get involved. 2) Encourage our fi ne county schools to make an emphasis on the negative effects of littering and pollution. 3) Swat-A-Bug. The NCDOT has a "Swat-A-Bug Program". If a person is seen littering you can e-mail their license plate number and an anony- mous letter is sent to them from the State Highway Patrol informing them that they were seen littering and the penalties for committing this act. There are also free "Swat-A-Bug "postcards available by call- ing 1-800-331-5864. Go to the web-site NCDOT Roadside Environmental Unit for more information. 4) Community Clean-Up. We must be willing to put feet to our words. As suggested by others, a full county clean-up day or days could be instituted. We would need to coordinate this with the proper authorities for bag removal and local media outlets. By doing this we will show others that we take pride in our wonderful county.
