State Sen. Wesley Meredith and former Sen. Tony Rand presented the award to Tew, a Cumberland County Agricultural Hall of Fame member who is known in the county for being an advocate and voice for agriculture and rural communities while serving on various boards and committees. Hurricane Repair Funds Available Homeowners may apply for funds available through Cumberland County Community Development to assist with rehabilitating homes damaged by Hurricane Matthew. The funding is for single-family owner- occupied homes damaged by the hurricane. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis through May 31, based on available funds. To qualify, homeowners must reside within Cumberland County but outside the city limits of Fayetteville. The home must have received at least $5,000 of damage. Household income must be at or below 100 percent of the area median income for Cumberland County. Homeowners may apply at Cumberland County Community Development at 707 Executive Place in Fayetteville. Citizens' Academy Accepting Applications Cumberland County is accepting applications for its upcoming Citizens' Academy running March 7 – April 11. The academy is free and held on six consecutive Tuesdays from 6-9 p.m. at various county government locations. The Citizens' Academy helps people gain a better understanding of what county government does and how the various departments play a vital role in the community. Participants must be residents of Cumberland County. Class size is limited, and academy slots are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Stream Cleanup, Road Repair Funds Available Agricultural landowners may apply for N.C. Disaster Recovery Act funds through the Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District to assist with removing storm-related debris from streams and repairing non-field farm roads, farm ponds and dams. The N.C. Division of Soil and Water Conservation received $12.2 million through the Disaster Recovery Act. These appropriations are for stream debris removal from farm field ditches and streams, repairs to non-field farm roads (roads or paths that lead to farm fields, but not those in or around the fields), including culverts in these roads and repairs to pond dams where the ponds are used solely for agricultural purposes. Agricultural landowners can apply at the Soil and Water Conservation District Office in the Cumberland County Agriculture Center, Suite 229, 301 E. Mountain Dr., Fayetteville, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The deadline to apply is Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. For more information, contact District Cost Share Technician Larry Simpson at 910-484-8479, option 3.
