2 THE ORACLE 100th AnniversAry Keynote speAKer, the honorAble MichAel KAnne '62 (Continued from page 1) he engaged in private practice from 1968- 72. Michael was handed the opportunity to temporarily serve as the Circuit Court judge for Jasper County when the sitting judge fell ill. That circuit judge unfortunately passed away as Michael was serving in his position, so he had the responsibility to finish out that term. Michael planned on going back into private practice after serving as the state circuit judge, but received a call from President Ronald Reagan's team asking if he was interested in serving as a federal District Court judge in Indiana. As a result of that call, Michael applied for the position and in 1981 was appointed by the President as a United States District Court judge for the Northern District of Indiana. Five years later, President Reagan elevated Michael to a seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, where he remains today. The federal appeals court in Chicago is made up of 11 judges and is responsible for reviewing appeals from U.S. District Courts across Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. "Lambda Chi gave me an opportunity to be active in leadership, gain social experience, and experience working with others," Michael stated. "I encourage undergraduates to do the same. Be active in the chapter. It doesn't make any difference what position you take as long as you enjoy it, it will help you as you move on in life in all of your different experiences." Michael lives in Rensselaer, Ind., with his wife, Judith Ann, who was an Alpha Chi Omega at IU. They have two daughters: Anne, who was a professional golfer, and Katherine, who is working on her Ph.D. at Northwestern University. Michael enjoys woodworking and spending time with his daughters. You can hear more from Michael and the impact of Lambda Chi on his life this April at the 100th anniversary celebration.
