Each year, individuals who have worked hard to promote not only their fair, but have made a difference to the entire fair in- dustry in North Carolina, are considered for the Holmes-Mc- Bride Humanity Award. The award is given in memory of two great men who were dedicated to the fair industry: James Holmes, Past-President of the Association and manager of the Durham County Fair for many years and Woodie McBride, longtime Associate Mem- ber Concessionaire and Carnival Operator. Both of these men helped many newcomers with their vast knowledge of the fair industry and always had a dollar to lend someone who was down. The Holmes-McBride Award is given to an individual for dis- tinguished achievement in, or contribution to, the Fair Indus- try. The award was received by the late Joe Goforth, former Cleveland County Fair manager, in 1991 and by the late Ferrell Jenks, concessionaire and employee of the Cleveland County Fair, in 1995. It is fi tting that Bobby Jenks, son of Ferrell and protégé of Joe, humbly accepted this prestigious award for 2017. Recipients of the Holmes-McBride Award must be a living member, or past member, of the North Carolina Association of Agricultural Fairs who has been consistently active in the fair industry for a number of years. ListentoLife.org LISTEN TO LIFE by Dr. Joey Faucette Have you ever noticed how some people do all the talking? And that they're usually the ones who are a little negative? And how other people are really good listeners? And that they're more often the ones who when they speak have something positive to say? I was in a room recently in which a man took all the air out of the room by talking only about himself. I watched while other people tried to be polite and listen, or gently change the subject to include others in the conversation. They changed their body language to move away from the person and some just left the room. I was in another room recently in which one person deftly engaged each of the others in the conversation, asking about their families, and so on. I watched as people moved closer together. This room was fi lled with what I call conversation generosity. The loving thing to do with others is to be generous in your conversation. So love others enough to really listen instead of just waiting to talk as you Listen to Life so you Live Positive. "Accepting New Clients" Steven P.
