Only until the other day, I had forgotten how much fun it really was. I had the opportunity to go back with my former high school basketball coach. He is a nut about fi shing and his specialty is walleye. We spent all day jigging for this wonderful table delicacy. We brought home 7 keepers. I was sure glad he let me take them all home and no one at my house complained about supper that night. Coach is on the list of the retired whose work now is fi shing on every day that ends in "Y". While some are still in the getting and gaining mode, these men are pur- suing the simple contentment that comes from being on one end of a rod or gun. Another retiree told me just last week that "Every day is Saturday". He loves life. He also admonished me to make sure that I keep my son hunting and fi shing so he will stay out of trouble. He told me that his son, who is now raising his on family, lives on the lake and fi shes every day. He is so proud of that. You see, to these men, their boat was more than a tool to catch fi sh. It was also a place where the awkwardness of a con- versation between a father and his child became easy. Over the years the lake or the river had become a place where counsel- ing, advice, and even prayers were offered. It was a place that major decisions were contemplated and settled. It was there that interruptions were welcomed if they were of the fi sh variety. And it was there that smiles were real and honest. It seems that "us men" need help in communicating at times. We struggle with the right words and tone of voice, and even timing. The fi shing trip knocks the edge off of all of that and allows us to spoon feed words of wisdom to those who must grow up, and old, and to those who need to "stay out of trouble." I am still booking for 2017. I'd love to come speak to your men's groups or your outdoor event. On Lake Norman, John and Earl Proctor picked up the win with 9.88, they also had big bass of the day with a 2.49 large ce K Bruc mouth. David O'Shields and Doug Sparrow had 5.77 and claimed second place, third went to JR Garland and Rick Miars with 3.19. On Lake Wy- lie, once again it was John and Earl Proctor, this time with Members of the Sons of American Revolution march to the Cowpens National Battlefi eld Monument for the wreath-laying ceremony during the 236th Anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens. The event was celebrated January 13-15, 2017 for the decisive American vic- tory over the British. The Cowpens National Battlefi eld is located at 4001 Chesnee Hwy. in Gaffney, SC. Photo by Jeff Melton Events commemorate 236th Anniversary of Battle of Cowpens 4 . 4 9 , w h i c h was also the big fi sh of the event. JR Garland and Rick Miars had 2.54 and there was no third place, as no other fi sh were caught. Back to Lake Hickory next. Moss The Sunday events on Moss Lake haven't had good turn- outs, due to weather, holidays and such. Last week, Chris Smith picked up the win with 10.25 and he had big bass with a 4.94 large mouth. David and Logan Hendrick had 7.27 to claim second. These events will continue each Sunday af- ternoon until weather will per- mit the Thursday night events to crank up.
