January is shaping up to be another busy month. Our docents report that attendance at the Museum is higher than in recent past seasons and we've been busy with the bake sale, fi eld trips and recycling. As in the past few years we hope to again have a booth in the Big Tent, which is a major fundraiser for us and a great opportunity to educate visitors about the Museum and answer questions about the Town. During the Big Tent week we also have the Museum open on Monday and Tuesday, so short term visitors have an opportunity to come by. We sell our history books and a few Quartzsite related items both at the tent and the Museum. Two special activities have been started at the Museum and will carry over to the Tent. We've been working on the restoration of the 47-arm cactus skeleton, although it has been slightly delayed due to the recent fl ooding of our parking lot. In conjunction with that, we are developing a collection of photos and stories about folks who viewed the cactus while it was still standing. Do you have photos of yourselves, or others, with the cactus? We plan to have a large bulletin board display of them, as well as a binder of stories and pictures about families who visited the cactus over the years. Would you like to be a part of history? Please bring or send us your photos and stories, for inclusion is this project! The second project has to do with the rocks of Quartzsite. Not the rocks that are for sale! We are talking about the local rocks you see in the des- ert. Have you ever wondered about the rocks you see here? We know that mining was a major part of Quartzsite history, and there are several types of ores present, but do you know what they look like? Are the rocks that you see in the desert just "ordinary" rocks, we call them "leaverights" as in 'leave her right there', or do they have special characteristics. Do you recognize sheelite, chrysocolla, calcite, agate? What is desert pavement? Do you have a collection of special shape rocks? Do you know about rocks that fl uoresce under a black light? If you are an expert, please come help us develop this exhibit. If you are curious, please come visit and see our collection. Some of these rocks are our oldest history! We are a non-profi t historical society. Visiting the Museum is free, although donations are always welcome. During the winter the Museum is normally open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 to 4, but will be open daily from Janu- ary 18 through January 29. We are located at 161 Main Street (parking in rear). Phone (928)927-5229. E-Mail QHS@TDS.net. We are continuing to recycle plastic, aluminum and glass, which can be dropped off any time at our front gate collection can. New volunteers welcome!!
