In 1903, Tourmaline was discovered in San Diego County, California. The Tourmaline Queen Mine was the leading producer of Tourmaline in the Pala District from 1904 to 1914. During this time the market was fu- eled by high demand for pink stones by Chinese Royalty, but the market collapsed in 1911 due to the overthrow of the Chinese Imperial government. From 1914 to 1971, the Tourmaline Mines in Pala were worked intermit- tently, until a spectacular fi nd in 1972 fueled a renewed interest in the tour- malines of San Diego County. In 1972, the Tourmaline Queen produced sev- eral large rubellite tourmaline speci- mens, and a huge pocket of rare bi- colors called the "Blue-Cap Pocket". This pocket of sticky reddish gray clay produced enormous specimens of a deep red tourmaline with a vivid blue cap at the termination. This pocket was dubbed "the fi nd of the century" and the drama of the Pala Tourma- lines had begun. Shortly afterward, the drama was repeated twice with the discovery of two more major fi nds. The famous Candelabra Tourmaline from the Blue-Cap Pocket discovery is on display today in the Smithsonian. The Pala District in California became a world class tourmaline mining hub with the discovery of those fi nds. The Himalaya Mine was acquired in 1977 and was actively worked until 1998. Today, the Pala District Mines still pro- duce some of the most beautiful and desirable watermelon, bi-color, and tri- color tourmalines in the world. Other colors of tourmaline that come from the Himalaya and Tourmaline Queen Mines are red, salmon, pink, blue, green, and teal. Pala District Tourma- lines are famous and highly sought af- ter the world over. Both the Tourmaline Queen Mine and the Himalaya Mine are privately owned, but the Himalaya Mine offers fee digging to the public at certain times of the year.
