JANUARY 18-24, 2017 UCW 21 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM What? No text crawl? That actually makes a weird kind of sense. After all, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (133 minutes) depicts the events that were described in the Star Wars: A New Hope text crawl, and the film ends immediately prior to the point that A New Hope begins. Which, of course, begs that question: when are all the Bothans going to die? Well. Hardcore fanboys and girls know that Bothans didn't die for the plans to the original Death Star; they died to bring the rebellion the plans for Death Star 2.0. Now you have something to talk about on your next date. You're welcome. Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelson) is hiding out on an otherwise empty planet called Lah'mu when Evil Bigshot Orson Krennic (Ben Mendohlson), rocking an utterly marvelous white cape, arrives to ruin his day. Galen has enough warning to send his wife and child into hiding, and contact his terrorist friend Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) before heading out to refuse to participate in war crimes. That does not go over well, and the scene ends with him getting drafted and his daughter left in the hands of religious extremists. Fifteen years later, evil cargo pilot Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed) decides to stop being evil because the plot required a defector to make the story work. He appears at the stronghold of Gerrera with a Thumb Drive of Great Import. He is rewarded by having a large tentacled mass suck on his head. We are told that this will drive him mad. Considering that a few scenes later some of Diego Luna's sexy whispering fixes him right up, I'm either overestimating the effect of a Shoggoth-like creature suckling someone's forehead or underestimating the sexiness of Diego Luna. Time will tell. Meanwhile, apparently, violent religious extremists do not make responsible guardians because Galen's daughter, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is in prison. At least, that's where she starts Act Two. It doesn't take long for a Rebel Intelligence officer, Cassian Andor (Luna) to free Jyn and drag her kicking and screaming to the Rebel base. In a brilliant scheme, they are going to force Jyn to travel to another planet and wander around until something happens to move the plot forward. Hilariously, the film takes on a real Wizard of Oz vibe, with Jyn serving as the Dorothy, gathering comrades on her way to see the Wizard, or, in this case, Saw Gerrera. Having contributed to the plot, Gerrera gracefully fades away from the main story, sending our heroes to something like their fourth planet, which, as it turns out, is where I lose track of how many different stupidly named desert planets there are in the galaxy. Our unlikely band of misfits now includes next year's hottest action figure, droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), Chirrut Îmwea (Donnie Yen) blind Jedi-Not-Really-A-Jedi and Chirrut's special friend Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen). As we rocket towards the grand finale, filled with larger-than-life space battles and more clichéd confrontations than you can shake a stick at, it is clear that there's life in the Star Wars franchise, even if Rogue One's CGI version of Carrie Fisher was an exercise in bad taste even before her passing. Let's just hope the producers can figure out a respectful way to leave Princess Leia out of the next film, because CGI people are … not okay. Now showing at Patriot 14 + IMAX.
