Calhoun Magazine | January/February 2017 | 3 EDITOR'S NOTE AMBER NAGLE EDITOR Welcome to another year. New years are like blank canvases. What will you paint WKLV\HDU"+RZZLOO\RX¿OO your canvas? I hope 2017 is a great year for all of us. I'm looking forward to the new year, and as usual, I have big plans. I have some home improvement projects on the list and some general organization projects. I'll start with our closets. In this issue, Liz Swafford wrote about the art of decluttering her home and keeping items that bring her joy. Her mantra is, "Be brave." I certainly need to be brave and throw out some things. I don't want to end up on an episode of Hoarders. Vickie McEntire interviewed one of her friends, Jim Hays, and talked to him about retirement. He's involved in the Meals on Wheels program here in Gordon County. I'm a big fan of Meals on Wheels and other programs that serve the elderly population of our community. Her article starts on page 6. Valentine's Day is just around the corner in February, so Dana Cooley-Keith wrote about her parents, Kenneth and Gloria Cooley, and shared a little of their love story. Shortly after we moved to Northwest Georgia, I noticed a VLJQRQ+LJKZD\WKDWLGHQWL¿HGWKHURDGZD\DVWKH³5RODQG Hayes Parkway." At the time, I wasn't familiar with Roland Hayes. Being the curious type, I googled his name and learned that he was a famous singer who was born right here in Gordon County. His story is inspiring. And because February is Black History Month, Chris Hillyard interviewed his nephew, Robert Hayes, and Toni Molleson at the Harris Arts Center and wrote a KLVWRULFDOSUR¿OHDERXW5RODQG+D\HV On page 24, Millicent Flake introduces us to Will Crowley. He grew up around here. When he ventured away from the nest to go to pharmacy school in Athens, he vowed to come home one day and build his own pharmacy. Today, Crowley Drug Company is located at the corner of Dews Pond Road and Curtis Parkway. This is also the much-awaited Readers Choice issue. Please take a few minutes to browse the pages to see the businesses and business owners our readers adore. And there's much more waiting for you inside Calhoun Magazine.
