"All too often, members of our community are senselessly in- jured or killed on local roadways by intoxicated drivers," said Lt. Lou Aviles, Red Bluff Area com- mander in a press release issued Friday afternoon. The goal of the CHP is to en- sure the safe passage of each mo- torist by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of drunk driving, the release said. A sobri- ety checkpoint is a proven effec- tive tool for achieving this goal and is designed to augment ex- isting patrol operations. "This will allow Caltrans to move forward on their rehabili- tation project, which will go from Sale Lane east to the junction with State Route 36E and up to Stice Road," said Tehama County Public Works Director Gary An- tone. "This will be a capital main- tenance project that will fill in pe- destrian sidewalk gaps and put in bike lanes and curb, gutter and sidewalks in Red Bluff." The Capital Preventative Main- tenance Pavement Project will start sometime in the spring with paving and grinding expected to continue through 2018, Antone said. The project will include resur- facing of the road through the entire project area, ADA corner ramp installations and bicycle lanes on both sides of the road from Sale Lane to the 36E junc- tion. The Tehama County Trans- portation Commission has com- mitted $800,500 from a Conges- tion Mitigation Air Quality funds to the project. The portion the county will be selling for $2,000 is a 52-square-foot piece at the northeast corner of the intersec- tion of Mulberry and Antelope, Antone said. Smith first started with the city as the secretary in the Plan- ning Department, Parks and Recreation and Public Works before moving up to the secre- tary office supervisor position. She then moved on to becom- ing the officer manager, before taking on the role of deputy city clerk as well as executive assis- tant to the city manager. Smith also stepped in for a six-week period as interim city manager prior to the Red Bluff City Council appointing Rich- ard Crabtree as city manager in February 2012. "I enjoy working with the employees and public and will miss the interaction with ev- eryone," Smith said. Smith is a native of Red Bluff, and grew up here with her four brothers, graduating from Red Bluff Union High School prior to attending Shasta College. Before working for the city, she spent 18 years working for Louisiana Pacific and Fibreboard. Smith said she is looking forward to traveling with her husband and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She plans to stay in Red Bluff. Smith will be available on an as-needed basis to help train Anita Rice, who will be replac- ing her in the role of deputy city clerk.
