"We are very limited where we can play because we do not have a venue outside of our local River Park," said Director Jay Thiel. "We hope that the community will take advantage of this opportu- nity to hear our band during this Christmas season and come down and listen to the Christmas music. We are going to have a full strong brass section, which should make the music more exciting." "Gary Strack has an incredi- ble level of dedication," said City Manager Kristina Miller while presenting him with a clock bearing his dates of service from 1970 to 2016. "A man with this level of integrity doesn't come around often." In preparing for Strack's de- parture, Miller did a bit of re- search to see how long other mayors had been in office and discovered something unusual about his length of service to his community. He was mayor twice from October 1972 to De- cember 1986 and February 1996 to December 2016 and served as councilman from April 1970 to October 1972 and March 1987 to February 1996. By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Advance Placement Physics students at Red Bluff High School put their lessons to the test Wednesday when 33 stu- dents, paired off into 11 different teams, launched missiles with catapults they made, trying to average out three attempts to 60 feet total. The goal was to hit as close to 20 feet as possible each time, which the winning team did. "The students built catapults in primarily two styles," teacher Lukas Kennedy said. "There's tre- buchet, which uses balance, and ballista, which is a spring elastic energy. We had one group make an onager, which is a pressurized style that was approved by the principal." Rather than see how far they could launch something, the stu- dents were tasked with fine-tun- ing the machines and working on precision to meet the goal of hit- ting a specific distance. "This is using the engineer- ing component of STEM (sci- ence, technology, engineering and mathematics) and uses what they've learned in class," Kennedy said. "They build it by trial and er- ror. Several of them are on their third design. They built it and it wouldn't launch so they upgraded it.
