Julia Belle Fair, a fi fth grader and Nylah Fair a kin- dergartener, at Thomas Jef- ferson Classical Academy, were excepted into and com- peted in the National Gin- gerbread Competition at the Omni Gove Park Inn in Ashe- ville, North Carolina. Julia Belle's entry, called Snowbird Christmas Cot- tage, is a top 10 winner in the youth category. It took Julia Belle over a month to build and mold her entry, making every part from scratch. It is a bright red gingerbread birdhouse covered in snow. She molded colorful choco- late birds, including a car- dinal, a bluebird, a bluejay, a fi nch and a mocking bird, that surround and sit on the birdhouse. Her great grand- mother, Betty Carpenter of Hendersonville, North Caro- lina, turned 90 years old in September. Julia Belle de- signed her gingerbread entry in honor of her great grand- mother because her great grandmother loves birds and is an avid birdwatcher. Julia Belle said, "It was such an honor to even be excepted into the national competition, as there are so many talented competitors, to actually make it into the top 10 was so ex- hilarating and exciting! I am an artist and I love to bake so this competition is so much fun for me. It was also the fi rst time my sister was able to compete and it was really fun going through the entire process with her." Nylah's entry, called Just Chilln, is her fi rst time being excepted into the national competition, as the entry age starts at 5 years old. She has watched her sister compete in the past and couldn't wait for her opportunity. Nylah's design is based on her fa- vorite winter activities. She loves building snow people, iceskating and her family. She built a gingerbread snow lodge with a her family de- pleted as molded chocolate snow people iceskating on a frozen pond made of icing. Nylah said she enjoyed mak- ing the snow people the best and thinks they look real. Julia Belle and Nylah both hope to continue par- ticipating in the National Gingerbread Competition as part of their holiday tradi- tion but will always love go- ing to see the incredible en- tries even if they don't get to participate. They feel very luck to have such a wonder- ful holiday event to enjoy. If you are interested in seeing Julia Belle and Nyl- ah's entries in person, along with many other masterful works of gingerbread art this year's competition display will be open to the public begin- ning on November 27th and continue through January 5th, 2017. As a means to pre- serve the overall guest expe- rience, The Omni Grove Park Inn invites guests not staying at the resort to view the dis- play Sunday after 3:00 pm through Thursday, excluding holidays. A minimum $10 outdoor parking charge will be in effect for all drive-on guests (one charge per ve- hicle, based on availability). Half of each parking charge collected this holiday season will be returned to the com- munity in support of various local not-for-profi ts.
