The tradi- tion continues this year with a Broadway favorite and a star- studded cast. "Hairspray Live" airs Wednesday, Dec. 7, on NBC. It was really only a matter of time before "Hairspray" saw another incarnation. The wig-filled, alliteration-heavy story of integration and going for your dreams has enjoyed much success on screen and stage. Set in 1962 Baltimore, the story follows "pleasantly plump" teenager Tracy Turn- blad as she realizes her dream of dancing on "The Corny Col- lins Show." The long-running Broadway production de- buted in 2002, and is based on the 1988 film written and di- rected by the king of the pen- cil mustache, John Waters ("Polyester," 1981). The musi- cal won eight Tony Awards, in- cluding Best Musical, and ran for more than 2,500 perfor- mances. The Broadway show was adapted for another run on the big screen in 2007, with a cast packed with A-listers in- cluding John Travolta ("Grease," 1978), Michelle Pfeiffer ("What Lies Beneath," 2000), Christopher Walken ("Catch Me If You Can," 2002) and Queen Latifah ("Living Single"). NBC's production also features star power, but true to "Hairspray" form, the lead role of Tracy Turnblad is played by a relative unknown. Newcomer Maddie Baillio beat out more than 1,000 oth- er Tracy hopefuls in an open audition. Luckily, the fledgling starlet has a strong team surrounding her. Canadian funnyman Mar- tin Short ("SCTV") plays her father, Wilbur, and Harvey Fier- stein ("Independence Day," 1996) reprises his Tony-win- ning Broadway role as Tracy's indomitable mother, Edna — but that's not his only role in the special. The gravel-voiced actor penned the teleplay for the special, just as he did last year for "The Wiz Live!" Two-time Grammy nomi- nee Ariana Grande ("Victori- ous") plays Tracy's best friend, Penny Pingleton, and Disney darlings Garrett Clayton ("Teen Beach Movie," 2013) and Dove Cameron ("Liv and Maddie") play teen heart- throb Link Larkin and resident brat Amber Von Tussle, respec- tively. Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson ("Dreamgirls," 2006) steps into the role of Motor- mouth Maybelle, dancer Der- ek Hough ("Dancing With the Stars") plays Corny Collins, and Tony winner Kristin Che- noweth plays scheming vil- lainess Velma Von Tussle. With only three of these live prime-time events under their belts, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are still get- ting the feel of things. Their first attempt was "The Sound of Music Live" in 2013, which drew more than 18 million viewers but received mixed reviews. In particular, a good deal of criticism went to the casting of singer Carrie Under- wood in the lead role of Maria von Trapp — the singing was good, the acting was not. Evidently learning from their mistake, showrunners cast an established actress in the following year's perfor- mance of "Peter Pan Live!" Al- lison Williams ("Girls") played the lead role of Peter Pan, but still, reactions and reviews of her performance, and the overall production, weren't spectacular. Last year saw the casting decision go in a different di- rection: an open audition was called, and Shanice Wil- liams was plucked from ob- scurity, beating hundreds of other would-be Dorothys to play the lead in "The Wiz Live!" Finally, Zadan and Meron had landed on a win- ner. "The Wiz Live" drew 11.5 million viewers, and the cast's performances — sing- ing AND acting — were lauded. With the star-heavy casts being a big part of the draw for these specials, casting an unknown as the lead in "The Wiz Live" was a gamble, but it was one that paid off in spades. Whereas Underwood and Allison Williams both re- ceived varying measures of backlash for their performanc- es, Shanice Williams' portrayal of Dorothy gleaned almost universal praise. She proved that a big role doesn't require a big name, which was no doubt a factor in the decision to use an open call to find this year's Tracy. As for Baillio, she's been getting advice and encour- agement on all sides, includ- ing from Marissa Jaret Win- okur, who originated the Broadway role of Tracy Turn- blad. A sophomore at Mary- mount Manhattan College, Baillio only decided to try out for the part about three hours before the audition. The desire to play Tracy, however, has been in her for years. "I fell in love with [the mu- sical], and I fell in love with Tracy," she told People, recall- ing watching the 2007 film adaptation when she was in elementary school. "That's when I knew that I wanted to play Tracy one day." "It's so relevant right now," Baillio added, relating the mu- sical's plot and content to to- day's growing movement to- wards positive body image. "I think this is a good time for 'Hairspray' to be a thing." NBC continues a Christmas tradition with 'Hairspray Live!' Featurestory
