Beta Theta Pi - University of Kansas

Our History I n celebrating more than 140 years of Alpha Nu, we can reflect on the important role we have played at the University of Kansas since 1873. With more than 2,100 men initiated into our storied history, the Alpha Nu Chapter strives to positively influence the lives of its members and to develop lasting friendships and experiences. Alpha Nu has consistently been a leading fraternity at KU and nationally. Ten buildings at KU are named after Alpha Nu Betas, including two for Alpha Nus who became KU chancellors, Deane Malott ('21) and Dr. Franklin Murphy ('36). Dr. Murphy was also the dean of the KU medical school at the age of 32. Many of our alumni have gone on to distinguished careers in business, education, medicine, engineering, law, government, and other endeavors. For all of us brothers, our lives have been connected because of our involvement with Alpha Nu. This common bond has propelled our lives forward, in some cases to great success. What we learned through our fraternity experience is incalculable. While we were in school, many of us were unaware how valuable that experience would be in influencing and shaping our principles, values, and lives. The ongoing development we received through our fraternity—including leadership, organizational, and social skills, teamwork, and character—has been integral to our personal success. The Usher Mansion was built in the year of Alpha Nu's founding—1873—by John Palmer Usher, Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of the Interior. The Betas moved to the "Hutt" in 1913. The house, now nearly 150 years old, has been a home away from home for many young Betas. It has been a house of consistent high achievement in academics, sports, and campus leadership. However, for Alpha Nu to maintain its record of accomplishment, we must overcome a number of challenges discussed hereafter. With our past secure, we must now look to our future.
