GameOn F Morale, Welfare & Recreation programs BY KELLY TWEDELL Fort Bragg provides fun through ort Bragg's Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs entertain mili- tary personnel and their families with concerts and special events and provide leisure travel services, equipment rental, fitness gyms and sports programs ga- lore. MWR activities are largely financed through a surcharge at Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) operated stores on military installations. Some of the ways the money has been used includes expanding the Fort Bragg fairgrounds, renovating Tucker pool, a complete overhaul of the library on post, transforming the Fred- erick Fitness Center into a soldier performance enhancement center and major additions to the Smith Lake recreation area, including new cabins, the ski rixen cable system and a zipline. According to Fort Bragg's former Garrison Commander Col. Stephen J. Sicinski, "The AAFES dividend of $4.2 million can be seen tangibly where it is spent. If we did not get that dividend return, there would be zero capital reinvestment at the local level for our MWR programs." Additionally, Callahan Athletic Center was recently upgraded as the Army's first 24-hour, 7 day a week facility. The facility has cardio machines, free weights, selectorized weights and even a juice bar. www.FayettevilleNCChamber.org | 43
