Looking forward to seeing our Friends! The new Quartzsite Area Chamber of Commerce & Tourism is proud to announce our participation as a Neighborhood Champion for "Small Business Saturday®" which is set for Saturday, Nov. 26. This is a day to celebrate and sup- port our small, local businesses in Quartzsite and all they do for our community. When we shop local we support the businesses owned by our friends and neighbors. We contribute to the investment in our community. An article published by the American Independent Business Alliance indi- cates that "for every dollar we spend locally, three dollars comes back to our community". Small Businesses are also more likely to donate to local charities, sports teams and non-prof- its. They, like you, are invested in our community. Small Business Satur- day is our chance to thank our small businesses for all that they do for us through out each year. Please join us this Shop Small Sat- urday Nov. 26 from 9am at the Quartzsite Area Chamber of Com- merce & Tourism offi ce for our second annual Shop Small Saturday kickoff. Visit www.QuartzsiteTourism.com. Bring Your Own Bags! The next time shoppers go to a grocery store in Blythe, California, they might want to remember to fi ll their cars with reusable bags – or it could all add up to a pretty penny when they go to check-out. California voters narrowly ap- proved Proposition 67 Tuesday, the nation's fi rst statewide ban on single-use plastic bags. The restric- tions apply to large food retailers, pharmacies, corner markets and liquor stores but not restaurants or department stores. Businesses can still offer paper bags and thicker plastic bags as long as they charge at least 10 cents for each of those items — a move crafted to encourage folks to tote Blythe shoppers: BYOB their own reusable sacks. The new law, which environmen- talists say is vital in reducing litter and ocean pollution, takes effect in about fi ve weeks after the Califor- nia Secretary of State certifi es the election Dec. 16. However, many stores are already imposing the plastic ban. The California Grocers Associa- tion released a statement that read in part: "California's grocers plan on complying with the will of the voters in their passage of Proposition 67. As an industry we are always look- ing for ways to reduce waste and be environmentally conscious, as it benefi ts both store operators and consumers. This measure will help further those efforts."
