On Tuesday, December 8, 2009, Acting Mayor Wes Huntly pro- claimed Quartzsite, Arizona, as the "Rock Capital of the World!" Huntley said, "The residents of Quartzsite, Arizona, are proud of our rich history of gold min- ing, prospecting, and love of rock. Each year buyers and sellers from around the world are attracted to our region for the fi nest rocks, gems and minerals. Quartzsite is the home of the nation's larg- est rock and gem club!" Huntley went on to say that the "Town of Quartzsite, Arizona will continue to promote the community, and support those ideals and projects that will grow the distinction of our community as the "Rock Capital of the World"! "How amazing is that one little rock, one little message can mean so much to somebody?" Murphy said. "It's so much bigger than any- thing I dreamed of. Dr. Maya Angelou, among many other wise spirits known and unknown, spoke about the im- measurable power and impact our acts of Kindness contributes to the world. Quartzsite, AZ - During the La- bor Day Party at Town Park this summer, a group of youngsters and adults spent a few hours in the heat, painting inspirational messages on small rocks for The Kindness Rock Project. "Quartzsite Rocks!" is a term used over the years in promotion of the town, so it seemed natural to welcome the Kindness Rocks. The inspira- tional rocks can be found between Hardies Beads & Jewelry and the Quartzsite Chamber & Tourism offi ce, across from McDonald's on Main Street. The Kindness Rock Project all began with one rock. Megan Murphy found it one day while walking along Sandy Neck Beach in West Barnstable, Massa- chusetts. She was looking for a little divine intervention and guidance among the dunes after a long day. Inspiration often arrived in the form of a heart-shaped stone, a reminder that everything would be alright. That day before going home, she decided to pay it forward in the form of some encouraging words. She took a small round rock in her hand, wrote "You've Got This" in marker, and left it behind. That was July 2015. Since then, Murphy has written inspirational messages on thousands of rocks. Her goals are to Inspire others and to recruit every person who stum- bles upon it to join the pursuit of inspiring others through small acts of kindness! Murphy treated the kindness rocks as a hobby, spending hours painting and dropping the rocks around Cape Cod. Once she added a hashtag — #thekindnessrock- sproject — to the back of her rocks, social media took the idea and ran.
