In the summer of 2015, TakingITGlobal's Sprout Ideas team ran 5 week-long
summer camps for students in Grade 9 to 12 from the Greater Toronto
Area and surroundings. Through the process of Design Thinking and
entrepreneurship training students seek to answer the question: What is
social innovation and entrepreneurship and how can we use it to change
the world?
Each week was spent exploring and identifying local and global issues that
students want to address followed by the development of action plans,
design logos, and building the brand of the product for their project. On
the last day of the camp, participants had the incredible opportunity to
pitch their projects to a panel of experts for a chance to win a $200 gift
card to kick-start the next step of their projects.
From mental health to gender equality in the workplace, water filtration
to global education, these students immersed themselves into the world
of social innovation and the results were awe-inspiring to say the least. By end of the summer, 150 students from 83
schools from 7 schools boards have successfully developed project plan and prototypes to address some of the world's
most pressing and difficult issues.
