FALL 2016 the lion tattler Sigma Alpha Epsilon Illinois Beta Housing LLC 1856 Sheridan Rd. Evanston, IL 60201-3837 Address Service Requested I n late 1961, I was married and in the last semester of my senior year, unaware of the proposal to build a new ΣΑE house in Champaign. It was fortunate that the project never saw daylight. First of all, the original house, first occupied in 1903, is a Prairie School architectural original, unique in design in many respects. It embodies many modern characteristics of an early 20th century structure, such as the expansive windows; leaded glass sidelights; simple, clean architectural lines; and detailing reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright and other modern architects of the era. The ample, symmetrical porches provide friendly, welcoming symbolic gesture perfect for a fraternal and highly social organization. I do not know the architects of the ΣΑE house, but he or she did a great job of creating a memorable architectural masterpiece with a very functional interior that has withstood the test of time, considering the 112 years of physical abuse by countless brothers. It would be interesting to research who was responsible for the distinctive, cutting edge design of 1903. The "new" proposal, circa 1961, was an architectural design disaster, typical of the trendy motel and fast food contemporary styling of the day. The articulated roof line is reminiscent of many unfortunate structures built only to capture attention but provide little lasting aesthetic or functional benefit. Sigma Alpha Epsilons should be thankful to Avery that he declined to bankroll the 1961 mistake, regardless of his misplaced patriotism and political beliefs. I lived in the house (1958 to '61) when it was painted white, although I possess a postcard from 1903 that shows the original dark-brick house in a stark setting, standing alone like a citadel without a tree or any other structures within sight. 211 Daniel, in 1903, was considered quite a distance from campus, and probably not desirable real estate. The postcard also contains an endearing note from an ΣΑE brother to his mother about how happy he was to "arrive at his new home." For me, it will always be one of the most favorite homes I have ever lived in. And it will, for me, always be white and the late '50s. I'm asking for an investment, not of money, but of your time that will pay dividends in the development of the True Gentlemen that make up your chapter. The Alumni Advisory Board members are the key alumni volunteers responsible for providing leadership, guidance, and support to the collegiate chapter, ensuring the chapter's strong health and continued growth. The Alumni Advisory Board and its member training are organized around the 12 core areas of chapter operations: *Chapter Management *Recruitment *Member Education *Leadership *Ritual *Scholarship *Service/Philanthropy *Health and Safety *University/Campus Relations *Alumni Relations *Housing *Financial Management There is no set number of members on an Alumni Advisory Board and you do not need to live in Champaign or the surrounding area. With today's technology, all you need is a desire to have a positive impact on a group poised to grow and do great things on Illinois' campus and in the surrounding community. By volunteering on the Alumni Advisory Board, you will help enrich the lives of the chapter members and make the chapter stronger. Please contact us if you would be willing to serve on the Illinois Beta Chapter Alumni Advisory Board. We look forward to hearing from you!
