McKinney '55 received the Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists' (SIPES) Outstanding Service Award in 2014 after serving as chairman of the Houston chapter and being on the board for several years. After terminating McKinney Exploration in 2011, he has focused on community activities pertaining to church choir, orchestra, Sunday school, the Note-ables singing group, the Houston Symphony League of the Bay Area, and Gardeners by the Bay. Most of his musical activities are associated with composition, performance, and learning to play the violin after leaving it for 60 years.
