Includes all Title IV subsidized and unsubsidized loans and all institutionally and privately sponsored loans. Does not include PLUS and other loans made directly to parents. Pell Grant: A federal student assistance program that provides need-based aid that does not require repayment to undergraduate students in postsecondary education institutions. Persistence: The rate at which students attending postsecondary education institutions remain enrolled in that institution or another institution. Persistence can be measured in terms of whether a student remains enrolled full time or is simply enrolled at least part time. PLUS loans: A federal student loan program in which loans are offered to parents of students attending at least half time at postsecondary education institutions. Private, not-for-profit institutions: The U.S. Department of Education definition (IPEDS) is "a private institution in which the individual(s) or agency in control receives no compensation, other than wages, rent or other expenses for the assumption of risk." These include both independent not-for-profit schools and those affiliated with a religious organization. Program: The U.S. Department of Education definition (IPEDS) is "a combination of courses and related activities organized for the attainment of broad educational objectives as described by the institution. Programs can be less than two years (requiring less than two years of full-time equivalent college-level work — four semesters or six quarters — or less than 1,800 contact hours to obtain a degree, diploma, certificate or other formal award); at least two years but less than four years (requiring at least two years but less than four years of full-time equivalent college-level work, including associate degrees and programs that can be completed in at least 1,800 but less than 3,600 contact hours to obtain a degree, diploma, certificate or other formal award); or at least four years (designed to be completed in at least eight semesters or 12 quarters to obtain a degree, diploma or other formal award. Includes programs resulting in all bachelor's degrees and other baccalaureate level or equivalent degrees, as well as five-year cooperative programs and those programs in which the normal four years of work are designed to be completed in three years). Public institutions: The U.S. Department of Education definition (IPEDS) is "an educational institution whose programs and activities are operated by publicly elected or appointed school officials and which is supported primarily by public funds."
