Preserving Our Present. Building for the Future. Page 3 scott rogers '71 Committed to Beta Alpha Join Him on the Donor list by making a gift Today r eflecting on why he is thankful for Beta Alpha, Scott Rogers '71 remembers that Beta Alpha gave him a sense of belonging at a time when he was adventuring out on his own. Throughout his years at Delt, Scott felt that Delt and his brothers created a commitment in him to "choose a path that inspired passion and a dedication to succeed." This commitment led him to a successful 41 years in the oil and gas industry. Most of his career was spent as an exploration geophysicist and manager, specializing in the creation and development of ideas for finding new reserves. Scott had the opportunity to work and live in four cities domestically and three different countries, while traveling to over 50+ countries. When the Preserving Our Present, Building for the Future campaign began, Scott became a supporter right away. "The house is in disrepair and needs a lot of work. A drive has been in motion over the last several years to update the existing structure and build a new wing. I have been contributing to that effort and was able to visit the new wing. Kudos to the groups who are responsible for that effort. It is looking wonderful and will be a great addition to the comfort of the in-house members, and hopefully attract brothers to spend a year or two longer in the Shelter." Scott understands that giving back to a community that supported him is important. "I believe Beta Alpha, is, at least partially, responsible for my success in life, both as a person and in my career. I hope my contributions will help to heighten the reputation of Beta Alpha, attract outstanding pledge classes, offer a fun and constructive learning environment, create life-lasting relationships, and, most importantly, aid in the transformation of high school boys into well-rounded, compassionate, focused young men ready for the realities of life." One of Scott's favorite Delt memories is the annual luau, especially the year when one of the pool walls gave way at midnight prior to the luau. "The entire brotherhood came together and worked all night to rebuild the pool. This unexpected circumstance, and our successful remedy, made that luau one of the best, and most memorable, ever." Scott and his wife, Carol Etsuko Rogers, have five children (three girls, two boys), and nine grandchildren ages 3 to 19. He enjoys spending time with family and traveling, including his most recent adventures fly fishing in the Chilean portion of Patagonia and a river cruise down the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal from Amsterdam to Budapest. When he's not busy with these more relaxing activities, Scott works part time with his consulting company in Denver. He can be reached at skitchymo@ yahoo.com. Join David and Scott and help us reach our goal of $1.25 million! undergraduates raise $2,400 in Philanthropic efforts, secure intramural Championship T he men at Beta Alpha are extremely proud of how we closed out one of the most successful semesters in recent years. We are in the process of launching the first-ever Greek-wide philanthropic event, The IFC Presents: The No-Shave Challenge, originally started by Philanthropy Chairman Ryan Sondles '18. Our chapter also capped off the year by winning the annual Little 500 race. cHapteR SetS tHe BaR in acaDemicS For the second semester in a row, we achieved a 3.01 GPA. This is something we have been working very hard to improve over the last few semesters. However, we are not going to settle for this. We are striving diligently to reach the all-IFC average of a 3.14. With continued help from local tutors and mandatory study tables, we believe this is something that we will accomplish in the next few semesters and will finish in the top 50% of the IFC. BRotHeRS launcH DeltS Don't SHaVe cHallenGe to RaiSe awaReneSS Last year, the brothers of Beta Alpha joined to raise money and awareness for the sake of men's cancers in November, specifically prostate, colon, and testicular cancers. Ryan organized the first-ever Delts Don't Shave Challenge. At the end of the campaign, $2,400 was raised. Ryan has received the support to launch the first-ever IFC-wide philanthropic event, including 31 IFC fraternities and IPH sororities, and the goal for this semester is to raise $100,000. Beta alpHa pleDGeS $5,000 to GReekS GiVe Back The community service committee was very active last spring. Led by Ryan Gillespie '18, the committee logged 85 hours working at The Warehouse and building several different types of structures, including a rock wall, basketball courts, etc. The Warehouse is a place for Bloomington's underprivileged children to attend after school. On top of that, Beta Alpha was a partner in Greeks Give Back, a brand new philanthropic event that built a house for a local Bloomington family. We pledged $5,000 to this philanthropic event and had 20 brothers actively working on the house. This fall, we will host a four-on-four basketball tournament where all proceeds will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). This will be a great way to show the campus our brand new extension and raise awareness about juvenile diabetes. Griffin Casey '19, Will Lussenhop '18, Luke Tormoehlen '16, and Jack Moore '18 win the Little 500 Championship for Beta Alpha. (Continued on page 4)
