W elcome to the fall 2016 Epsilon Omicron newsletter! We received an overwhelmingly positive response to our spring newsletter and, as we had hoped, it appears to have increased the involvement of our alumni base and awareness of the great things that are happening with the Chapter. Here are just a few highlights of the activities and accomplishments of the Chapter and the House Corporation since the last newsletter. Second-Best Chapter in the Nation This year, Epsilon Omicron was named runner-up for the National Chapter of the Year award! This means that in the last three years, the Chapter either won (2014) or was runner-up (2015 and 2016) for the National Chapter of the Year. The house and annex are again at capacity thanks to another successful summer recruitment and the signing of 33 pledges. The Chapter is teamed with Alpha Omicron Pi for Homecoming this year and members look to be competitive in all university activities. All of this while maintaining a Chapter GPA in the top five fraternities on campus. Chapter House Update As most of you know by now, the Housing Corporation, with the help of a group of alumni, purchased the Chapter House in October 2015. Our first priority was to address any health and safety concerns and then tackle some of the deferred maintenance items left unattended by the previous owner and landlord. Based on inspections we had done by our insurance provider, the city Fire Marshal, and the property management company, we made several important updates. We improved the safety of the stairways by adding handrails, increased the stability of the fire escapes, upgraded all fire protections systems, and added emergency lighting. We successfully abated the water and drainage issues in the basement and have caught up on deferred maintenance on the HVAC system and plumbing and electrical repairs. Summer Improvements at the Chapter House We also tackled some summer improvement projects to help with property preservation and cosmetic issues and to improve the quality of life of members. These projects included: R Replaced or repaired all interior doors and frames. R Replaced the carpet on second and third floor hallways and all stairways. R Painted the second and third floor hallway walls and woodwork. R Painted the exterior windows and trim. R Repaired and restained the front door. R Installed a duct-less air conditioning unit in the dining room. That means no more sweaty formal dinners! We are still in the process of exploring long-range options for further improving the Chapter House. In the meantime, we hope to be able to fund additional improvement projects each year and continue to provide a safe and structurally sound house for our members.
