The lion's lore page 2 SAE on the Upswing Our diligent work ethic and perseverance over the past few semesters has moved the Kansas Beta Chapter to the pinnacle of fraternity life at Kansas State. While here, we enjoy all the benefits of being a top chapter: influence within our university and community, a significant social presence, and a respected recruitment process. Kansas Beta has inspired many generations of men in the past and will continue to do so as we look to the future. Accomplishments The men of Kansas Beta have been recognized numerous times over the past semester. At the ground level, our house is filled with a competitive atmosphere, which led us to obtaining, once again, a GPA in the top five out of 27 fraternities on campus. Out of all the SAE chapters nationwide, only a few are nominated for the Zeal Award, our chapter was among them this past semester. At the SAE National level, our chapter was awarded, on the annual leadership cruise, three notable awards. Our chapter won the Chapter Achievement Award, which is the second- highest attainable award through SAE nationally. Our treasurer, Ryan Stricklan '18, won the Outstanding Treasurer Award. As President, I won the Outstanding Eminent Archon Award. At the University level, I also was awarded with the Director's Award for outstanding leadership on campus. Our chapter took home the Dean's Award, the second highest honor that is given to a fraternity by Kansas State University. Our accomplishments are reflective of the culture we promote in our home. While our past accomplishments are exciting, the future potential of our chapter is even more exciting. In staying consistent with our goals last semester, we have greatly broadened our on-campus leadership presence. We have members who are currently pursuing positions on the Interfraternity Council, we have those who are taking initiative and overseeing the planning of joint fraternity philanthropy events, and even members seeking leadership positions in organizations outside of the Greek system. We also set the goal of increasing our presence in the community. To achieve this, we have partnered with our neighbor, FarmHouse fraternity, and are holding a charity concert in our yard, where we expect more than 2,000 people to attend. In addition, we have revived Paddy Murphy week! We see this as an opportunity to bring a great tradition back and share it with the community in a positive manner. In short, we have followed through on our goals and are continuing to build on them. Recruitment Each man in our house is a reflection of the chapter. Necessarily then, our recruitment is very selective. We extend offers of membership only to those who we believe have the utmost potential to become True Gentlemen. This fall semester, we were fortunate to find 25 men (see page 3) who met all the qualifications. Already, the influence of living in the house has positively impacted their lives. Our recruitment process truly distinguishes Kansas Beta from the rest of the Greek system at Kansas State. Each man is evaluated according to a comprehensive grid system. This system ensures only the men of highest quality are welcomed into our home each semester. The benefits of this system are easily visible. The new member class is made up of a diverse group of young men that exemplify the characteristics we value. Through the leadership of the upperclassmen, this new member class will learn how to be successful in college and how to embrace the True Gentleman. Academics Our goal each semester is to obtain at least a 3.3 GPA. Once again, we achieved our goal, earning a 3.318 and maintaining our place in the top five GPAs among all fraternities. Our GPA is above the all-Greek, all-university, and all-men's GPAs. Beyond academics, our chapter has initiated a professional development program. Older members who have internship experience are mentoring younger members, assisting them in resume building, career fairs, and interview practice. The Most Important Piece In my last semester as eminent archon, I hope to continue the legacy of SAE. I am very proud of what our chapter has accomplished these past few years. However, none of this would happen without the alumni support we receive day-in and day-out. I say with confidence that the best times are ahead for Kansas Beta. So again, I thank all of the gracious alumni who have supported us through the years and continue to support us today. Phi Alpha brothers, Daniel A.
