R
ight away during recruitment her freshman
year, Heidi Riemann Miles '80 connected
with the women of Tri Delta. They made her
feel welcome and she could see herself
fitting in.
"I remember standing on the sidewalk
looking at the house and thinking how
beautiful it was. Then I looked at the
Tri Delta girls and they were beautiful
too! There was so much excitement and
pride once you were initiated and could
wear your DDD letters on campus."
That sense of connection was profound for
Heidi in her first year at Mizzou. At that time,
students really only called home once a week
and homesickness crept in, Heidi recalls. "I
remember feeling lonely and isolated when I
arrived at Mizzou. It was the sorority that was
instrumental in making me feel like I had a home
away from home and a sense of belonging. My
sisters helped me to stay at school and made my
world feel a lot smaller and more comfortable."
Heidi thrived at Mizzou, participating
in recruitment and skits at Tri Delta and
earning a spot as a cheerleader, traveling
with Mizzou's sports teams. She earned
her degree in elementary education and
taught for 18 years, focusing on students
with learning disabilities. She started a
family with her husband, John, and has
four children.
The family has moved from St. Louis, to
Florida, and back to Columbia. Since returning
to Missouri, Heidi has renewed her involvment
in Tri Delta, serving as president of the alumnae
group, moving into references, and currently
working with the undergraduate members of
Delta Xi as recruitment advisor.
"I'm at a time in my life where I thought I could
take on a role like this and I have so fallen in
love with the women I've had a chance to work
with. I feel compassionate toward the issues they
face and it's really neat to have the opportunity
to help them prioritize what's important and steer
them in the right direction. I think I get just as
much out of it as they do!"
Heidi still gets together with the friends she made
as an active, saying, "I can't stress enough that
those bonds are not just for four years. There are
always bumps in the road, and those women are
always there for me."
Outside of Tri Delta, Heidi enjoys cooking,
exercising, and spending time with her family.
She remains a Mizzou fan, tailgating and
attending as many football and basketball
games as she can. Heidi can be reached at
heidimiles@me.com.
