The Emmy-nomi- nated writer/producer helms four of the biggest superhero shows on TV today, and has le- gions of fans itching for more (which, by the looks of things, they'll get, as Fox ordered a pi- lot episode of Berlanti's "Black Lightning" last month). After starting with "Arrow" in 2012, the "Berlantiverse" expanded in 2014 with "The Flash" and again last year with "Supergirl." Earlier this year, a fourth superhero proj- ect premiered, and now, after a quick season 2 pickup, the newest iteration of "DC's Leg- ends of Tomorrow" is set to premiere Thursday, Oct. 13, on CW. Starring Caity Lotz ("The Machine," 2013), Arthur Dar- vill ("Doctor Who"), Victor Garber ("Alias") and Bran- don Routh ("Superman Re- turns," 2006), among others, "Legends" focuses on a rag- tag group of heroes and vil- lains who need to work to- gether to save Earth from ut- ter destruction. After a fairly successful first season, sea- son 2 is shaping up to be big- ger and better, with the promise of many new faces and even a massive crossover later this fall. "We're telling one cohesive story [for the crossover]," Ber- lanti told IndieWire last month."'Supergirl' will partici- pate, but the storyline doesn't actively begin there. There are some characters who show up in her episode, but the story begins with 'The Flash' epi- sode and goes to 'Arrow' and 'Legends of Tomorrow.' ... Just today I was holding the three scripts back-to-back — that's 180 pages of material. It's a three-hour story, almost a miniseries." Before then, though, fans of "Legends" will be introduced (and reintroduced, to some ex- tent) to a smorgasbord of new characters, many of whom are members of the Justice Society of America — the predecessor to the Justice League — and the Legion of Doom. Patrick J. Adams ("Suits") was introduced in the season 1 finale of "Legends" as Rex Tyler, a.k.a. Hourman, and told Sara Lance, Ray Palmer and the other Legends about the JSA. He returns in the season 2 premiere. The JSA itself will be made up of the likes of Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers, "Of Kings and Prophets"), Ob- sidian (played by both Lance Henriksen, "Millennium," and Dan Payne, "Strange Empire"), Citizen Steel (Nick Zano, "Mi- nority Report") and Stargirl (Sarah Grey, "A Mother's In- stinct," 2015), and will play a big part in the upcoming sea- son. On the flip side, the supervil- lain alliance dubbed the Le- gion of Doom will feature some faces already seen in some of the other CW super- hero series. "Arrow's" leader of the criminal organization H.I.V.E., Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough, "Minority Re- port," 2002), and Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman, "Torchwood"), a.k.a. Dark Ar- cher, make up part of the Le- gion of Doom. The Reverse- Flash (Matt Letscher, "Her," 2013) and Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller, "Prison Break") both originated in "The Flash" — Captain Cold was even a member of the Legends last season — but now make up the supervillain alliance in season 2 of "Leg- ends." Got all those names? It's a lot to chew on, but it sets up a thrilling second season with plenty of story possibilities, es- pecially since showrunners say the Legends will be going on a different mission this season that doesn't include Vandal Savage (Casper Crump, "Lyk- ke"). And, thankfully, most of the Legends from season 1 are back in season 2. White Ca- nary (Lotz), Atom (Routh), Heat Wave (Dominic Purcell, "Prison Break"), Rip (Darvill) and Firestorm (Garber and Franz Drameh, "Some Girls") all return to help take on the Legion of Doom. The two faces who won't be returning for season 2 — at least, not right away — are Hawkgirl (Ciara Renée, "Back to Reality") and Hawkman (Falk Hentschel, "Knight and Day," 2010), whose storylines were wrapped up in tidy little packages with the end of the Vandal arc, according to show- runner Marc Guggenheim. "We went through the team, made a list of all the characters and started to think of stories for them," he told Deadline in May. "When we got to Hawkman and Hawk- girl, we had trouble coming up with stories. The bow was tied so tightly and neatly with their story in the finale, that every- thing we thought of felt very forced. After 4,000 years, they were no longer under the specter of Vandal, and we felt they need some time off. Bringing them back to the team as soon as the beginning of season 2 felt premature." That's not to say they won't necessarily be back; it's entire- ly possible they could be. But Guggenheim added that the minds behind "Legends" have a "very organic system in place to take a break from characters," and that they "al- ways wanted 'Legends' to be distinct season to season." Fans don't have to wait any longer to see just how distinct season 2 of "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" is. Catch the sea- son premiere Thursday, Oct. 13, on CW.
