(OK, maybe not always, but at least for a very, very long time.) And for good measure. "Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal" and "How to Get Away With Mur- der" are critically acclaimed masterpieces that draw big viewership numbers and plen- ty of accolades — each show has at least one Emmy, as well as countless other awards. But wait? What's this? "Scandal" is conspicuously ab- sent this fall. Don't fret, though! Kerry Washington ("Ray," 2004), as Olivia Pope, will be back midseason — the show went on hiatus during the actress's pregnancy, delay- ing production and release ever so slightly. Until then, Thursday night viewers can dine on "Notorious" in the va- cated time-slot, with a new ep- isode of the freshman series airing Thursday, Sept. 29, on ABC. No, "Notorious" is not a ShondaLand show, but it still has a ShondaLand-esque fla- vor to it. The series stars Piper Perabo ("Covert Affairs") and Daniel Sunjata, whom you may recognize from a handful of season 7 and 8 episodes of "Grey's Anatomy," as TV show producer Julia George and de- fense attorney Jake Gregorian, respectively. The two main characters are based on real-life people — longtime "Larry King Live" producer Wendy Walker and lawyer Mark Geragos — and is inspired by their relation- ship: him a master manipula- tor of the media, and her a driving force behind what does and doesn't make it to people's living rooms. And while it may seem like a one- sided relationship where the hot-shot lawyer pulls all the strings, it actually goes both ways. "Mark is a master manipu- lator of the press," Walker, who serves as an executive produc- er for "Notorious," said at the Television Critics Association press tour last month. "No- body does it better than he does. He really used me and our show to get sympathy for Scott [Peterson, convicted of murdering his pregnant wife]. I used him and owned that story because of my relationship with Mark, and he owned my show. We didn't do anything wrong or lose CNN integrity, but it was a relationship that really worked well for us." It's tricky ground to walk on in real life, but in the fictional realm of television, it makes for a sexy, scintillating hour of television that seems perfect sandwiched between the two ShondaLand shows. "Notori- ous" makes good use of what Sunjata called "a moral tight- rope and weaving back and forth" at the TCA press tour, and series co-creator Josh Ber- man ("Drop Dead Diva") elab- orated on how the real-life re- lationship between Geragos and Walker would translate on screen. "Sometimes it's collusion and sometimes they're in con- flict," he said. "I think it de- pends on the episodes and their storylines. They use each other for their own ends as much as their common end." As Berman said, Julia and Jake both have their own end- games, but according to a news release from ABC, there's one thing the pair won't do: lie to each other. It turns out that, beneath the manipulation and suspect morals, Jake and Julia are in a relationship, and that comes first — at least it should, but the trailer for the premiere throws that notion into ques- tion, no doubt setting up for some explosive drama over the course of the season. Perabo's Julia and Sunjata's Jake aren't the only two char- acters masterfully weaving themselves in and out of this web of manipulation; they both have their own teams to help them reach their end goals.
