SEPTEMBER 21-27, 2016 UCW 45 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM It is here. Just in t ime for the elect ion season, this new book can g uide this fall's polit ical candidates to the Nor th Carolina eateries where locals gather to eat and exchange informat ion and v iew point s about public af fairs. For inst ance, the book feat ures a barbecue in Concord where Hillar y Clinton campaigned in 2008, a dow ntow n café in K ings Mount ain where the speaker of t he Nor th Carolina House eat s break fast, a count r y buf fet in Randolph Count y where a powerf ul st ate represent at ive holds cour t on weekends surrounded by R ichard Pet t y memorabilia, a famous barbecue in Gastonia where t he parent s of a top aide to the st ate's at torney general cour ted, a rest aurant in Ashev ille that ser ves Barack Obama it s t ast y ribs, a small rest aurant in Pembroke where local polit ics and Lumbee t ribal mat ters get set t led, a barbecue in Henderson where a U. S. congressman eat s whenever he is in tow n, an eater y in Rock y Mount st ill ow ned by the family of a former congressman, and one near Smithf ield where the ow ner can tell you how he helped his polit ical par t y t ake over the count y. A ll of these places are in a book I have been work ing on and w rit ing about for years. A lthough it s of f icial " launch date" is October 3, North Carolina's Roadside Eateries: A Traveler's Guide to Local Restaurants, Diners, and Barbecue Joints is already in the book stores. The book is a good g uide for polit icians t raveling across our st ate look ing for places to meet locals and persuade them to give suppor t . However, Eateries was put together w ith reg ular t ravelers in mind, advent uresome people who would rather experience a special or unusual local favorite rest aurant at mealt ime than eat another quick meal at one of the ubiquitous nat ional chains. I confess that my vent ures into polit ics led me to some of the places in the new book . In fact, in my polit ical campaigns, I was more successf ul at f inding great gathering places for break fast and lunch w ith suppor ters than I was at w inning elect ions. At eateries such as Trout man's in Concord and Hursey 's in Burling ton, the reminders of v isit s by famous polit icians make them mini-museums as well as good places to eat w ith t he locals. Years ago, I began to w rite about my favorite count r y cook ing places in this week ly newspaper column. My readers liked those columns bet ter than my usual ones about polit ics and book s. W hen I inv ited them to w rite about their favorite local eat ing places, I got enough material for more columns and for a series of magazine ar t icles that feat ured local eateries near the interst ates. If you sent a suggest ion or t wo, thank s for being my co-author of the new book . Writ ing about these t reasured eateries present s a special challenge. They do not last forever. They go out of business, or change ow nership, or keep chugging unt il they just run their nat ural course. So par t of the joy is f inding new and welcoming places to get sweet tea, stopping at lit t le diners w ith hushpuppies you never forget, meet ing good people and watching people set t le polit ical dif ferences over a slice of lemon pie. Somet imes I think I have seen and t asted nearly ever y thing. But there w ill always be more. I love this st ate and love t raveling it s roads, f inding even more special places and repor t ing back to you in this column and now in the new book . If what I w rite inspires you to go a lit t le out of your way to f ind your ow n special place, where folk s greet you like an old f riend, even if it is your f irst v isit, then you w ill make me ver y happy.
