THE ORACLE A L P H A - O M I C R O N Z E TA O F L A M B D A C H I A L P H A AT I N D I A N A U N I V E R S I T Y / FA L L 2 0 1 6 ALPHA-OMICRON RECOGNIZED AT GENERAL ASSEMBLY Chapter Wins Phoenix and Alumni Publications Awards A s I write this letter for The Oracle, Joe Folkening, Wabash College '88, five members of our chapter leadership, and I are in Miami at the biennial General Assembly Convention. We are representing Alpha-Omicron at these meetings where we hope to gain more insight into what other successful chapters do, as well as celebrate our brotherhood with the many members of Lambda Chi Alpha. I am excited to report that AO has had a few recognitions that are worthy of mentioning. First, Joe, our High Pi, was awarded the Order of Merit this summer and it was officially presented to him in Miami. As many of you know, this is one of the highest awards that can be bestowed upon a brother of Lambda Chi Alpha. Joe has been a tireless contributor to AO and is instrumental to our mentoring process for our active members. Secondly, we are happy to announce that AO was awarded the Phoenix Award from our International Headquarters (IHQ). The Phoenix Award is the second-highest award a chapter can receive from IHQ. It is given to a chapter that has made positive strides in chapter operations for three years in the areas of improved membership strides, depth of programming, and risk-free operations. This award represents just how far we have come over the past five years on the IU campus. I cannot stress how much this has been a huge team effort. For those who have been reading this column in The Oracle over the past few years, you have heard me write about just how much has changed at AO. What our members have accomplished over the past several years is really quite an accomplishment, and that only happens when our alumni get involved with mentoring our undergraduates and supporting the chapter financially through donations. Lastly, we were awarded the Alumni Publications Award representing our work on The Oracle, as well as our website, www.lcaiu.com. A big thank-you to our fraternal partner, Pennington & Company, who is involved with our alumni communications. We have a busy school year approaching with Homecoming on October 15 and our celebration of 100 years on the IU campus on April 1, 2017. For our anniversary celebration, we have secured a block of hotel rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn and will be holding the celebration at the Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union. Further details are included in this issue of The Oracle as well. It is truly a momentous occasion when you can say we have represented Lambda Chi Alpha on campus for 100 continuous years! We hope you are making plans to attend with your brothers today! Fraternally, Tony Drake '84 House Corporation President (630) 336-8973 tdrake1219@gmail.com (Continued on page 4) W hen Joe Folkening, Wabash College '88 found himself looking for a phone booth to make a phone call to his father after a hazing experience in another fraternity on Wabash College's campus, a brother from Lambda Chi Alpha offered Joe not only a phone to make that call, but a place to stay. Joe's journey with Lambda Chi began there. Joe didn't just stick around in his undergraduate years, but has volunteered his time in the years since in various positions with the fraternity. Joe recently became one of the youngest recipients to ever be awarded the Order of Merit lifetime achievement award for Lambda Chi Alpha this past August at General Assembly in Miami, Fla. Joe served on the house corporation at Wabash College for 27 years, 11 of those years as president. He was asked to become High Pi for Alpha-Omicron Zeta in 2012 and has served in this position since then A Lifetime of Service Order of Merit Recipient Joe Folkening, Wabash College '88 Dedicates His Life to Fraternity
