RED BLUFF 2010

Canoe Drag Races
More than 200 canoe and kayak
paddlers turn out for the Red Bluff Great
National Canoe Drag Race at the Red
Bluff River Park.
The event features five age brackets
in five separate categories and five
challenge cup categories for local brag-
ging rights — in all, 30 racing cate-
gories.
The event is sponsored by the
Sacramento River Discovery Center,
the Exchange Club of Red Bluff and the
city's Parks and Recreation
Department.
Races start at 11 a.m. and this
year's event is tentatively scheduled for
July 31. Call 527-6220 for more infor-
mation.
In additional to the "drags," the day's
festivities include a Dutch oven cook off,
kiddie faire, food booths, commercial
and craft vendors and entertainment.
Western Open Fiddle
Championships
Some of the finest fid-
dlers of all ages and
backgrounds gather at the
Western Open Fiddle
Championships at the
Tehama District
Fairground in mid-
October.
The fiddles have been
gathering in Red Bluff for
more than a quarter cen-
tury and the competition
is fierce, but friendly.
After watching the fid-
dling competition, there's
a country dance. And
some of the best fiddling
can be caught late in the
evening as fiddlers jam
with each other around
their campsites at the
Fairground.
Winners from Red Bluff
go on to compete at the
national contest in Weiser,
Idaho.
The fun starts days
before the competition, as
fiddlers spontaneously
meet at sponsoring busi-
nesses all over town to
show off their musical tal-
ent.
