Universal wastes are products or items found in most homes and businesses that contain toxic materials that can pollute the environment or cause illness when collected in large amounts. When there are large amounts, universal waste becomes hazardous waste. Alkaline batteries, fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent lamps, mercury switches, thermometers, thermostats, electronic devices, and appliances that have mercury switches or thermostats are considered universal waste. Can I put U-Waste in the Trash? No, it is against the law to place u-waste in the trash. The Tehama County Landfill accepts all types of batteries everyday free of charge. Tehama County residents (except Corning) may take advantage of the battery bag recycling program. Fluorescents and mercury containing devices are accepted at locations throughout the County. Please call 528-1103 for a list of locations. Electronic devices and appliances are accepted at the Landfill for a fee. Free electronic collection events are scheduled regularly. Call 528-1103 for details. What Happens to it All? Harmful pollutants such as freon or mercury must be removed by a certified professional. The freon and mercury are recycled. Batteries, tv's, monitors, and other electronic devices are also recycled. Battery Bag Program Tehama County residents (except for the City of Corning) can now recycle their used alkaline batteries. Battery bags are now available free of charge at Green Waste of Tehama, Shasta Fasteners, Red Bluff True Value Hardware, Tehama County Environmental Health, Los Molinos Hardware, Tehama County Landfill, Radio Shack, and Red Bluff WalMart.
