The Iowa DelTa RepoRT 3 IOWA DELTA MAINTAINS STRONG FOOTING, SETS PLANS IN MOTION FOR CONTINUED EXCELLENCE S alutations, brothers! I hope you are doing well, prospering amongst family, friends, and colleagues, and continuing to prove, to this day, that Phi Delta Theta Iowa Delta alumni are some of the finest men upholding the Fraternity's core values of friendship, sound learning, and moral rectitude. As president of the current colony, I can justly say that without your support, we wouldn't be near as close to our installation as we are right now. It was indeed a busy spring semester for the men at 1245 34th Street. Chapter Committed to Academic Success Our chapter GPA stands at 3.094, which ranks us sixth out of the eight fraternities on campus, and a net improvement of 0.07 from spring 2015. Scholarship Chairman Daniel Hong was hard at work last summer improving our scholarship program so we can see our GPA rise even higher. Sweet as Phi Raises More Than $400 for ALS Association Last spring, Philanthropy Chairman Tyler Barber helped our very first philanthropy week, Sweet as Phi, come to fruition, where our chapter raised more than $400 for the ALS Association. We will host another philanthropy weekend on September 15-17. Iowa Delta Recruits Seven, Promotes Community Service Iowa Delta also witnessed one of its best 365 recruitment efforts last spring, recruiting seven new members into the brotherhood. In February, Iowa Delta teamed up with the women of Delta Gamma for the second year in a row at their Snowball Dance at Wesley Acres, where some of our brothers made it on the local news. Some brothers also volunteered their time at the Des Moines MDA Muscle Walk for the second year in a row. We have built a strong rapport with their organization, as well as the men of Alpha Tau Omega. Alumni Attend Drake Relays Celebration The first Ghost of the Past Drake Relays Celebration in late April marked the first time in many years that alumni were able to join us at 1245 34th Street, and I received many comments from brothers about the inspiration, hilarity, and pride alumni exuded toward them at the event. It was indeed a joyous and special time for everyone. We're already looking forward to an even bigger showing and celebration next year when we are officially installed as a chapter. Brothers Demonstrate Leadership on a Local and National Level In mid-January, I attended the Presidential Leadership Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, where I partnered with multiple other colony presidents from across the nation to discuss recruitment tactics, petition work, and member motivation. I completed my term on Drake's campus as student body treasurer for the Student Senate; two brothers, Matt Malmberg and Ben Williamson, were selected as resident advisors for the 2016-17 school year; and Brody Rothert serves as president of a new student organization, Drake Off Campus, which encourages students who aren't comfortable with the collegiate social scene to get out and have fun. This organization has skyrocketed in popularity amongst Drake's undergraduate population. In addition, Sam Hehir completed the first half of his term as co-president of Gamma Iota Sigma, a professional actuarial science fraternity on campus. Thank You, Alumni, for Making Our Chapter One of the Best Iowa Delta is flourishing and standing on the brink of initiation and installation, which will likely occur in mid- to late November. I encourage you all to stop by the house this semester if you can and see firsthand the progress Iowa Delta has made. We welcome all guest alumni to our weekly chapter meetings, held on Sundays at 7 p.m. None of this would be possible without your generosity, advice, understanding, commitment, and pride. On behalf of the entire Iowa Delta colony, I thank you. Yours in the Bond, Trevor Matusik Chapter President trevor.matusik@drake.edu Brothers race a mile in downtown Des Moines to celebrate the 2016 Drake Relays. Andrew Olson, Riley Karpen, and Tyler Barber show off their name tags at the Kleberg Emerging Leaders Institute in Oxford, Ohio, after becoming Knights of Pallas. Tyler Barber gets pied in the face by Sigma Phi Epsilon President Mitchell Klocke during our Sweet as Phi philanthropy week. All proceeds went to the ALS Association for the Iowa Chapter.
