32 | September/October 2016 From the seeds of an idea, a Botanical Garden in Fayetteville is born "The Garden was conceived at Martha Duell's kitchen table, in the print of Roger Mercer's column, and with the cajoling, laughing and crying of dozens of committed supporters and volunteers. There were turbulent times at the beginning. It took hard work, sacrifice and perseverance, but the achievements are so rewarding." - C. Bruce Williams, Ph.D. 1988 Dr. Bruce Williams, the Director of Horticulture at Fayetteville Technical Community College; Mrs. Martha Duell, a community advocate; and garden columnist Roger Mercer conceive of a world-class botanical garden that would go miles toward improving the image of Fayetteville. 1989 Mercer uses his columns in The Fayetteville Observer to propose to the local citizenry a place that promised peace, tranquility, joy and beauty, plus income and recognition. After leading his audience on a poetic tour of this green dream, Mercer's public response becomes overwhelming, and the momentum begins. 1996 An 1886 farmhouse complex from the neighboring town of Eastover, originally built by Alexander Carter, is donated to the Garden through the actions of Hazel McCauley and the generosity of Larry and Susan Snider. The grouping also includes a small country store, corn crib and smoke house. The historical buildings hold the Garden's offices and gift shop from 1996 – 2011. 2006 Fayetteville Technical Community College celebrates the dedication of its Horticulture Education Center adjoining the Garden. Partnership opportunities between the two institutions began in 1999, through the efforts of Senator Tony Rand and Fayetteville's local legislative delegation. 2007 The Garden embarks on the Campaign for Natural Growth to finance its capital and expanding programs, with a one million dollar gift from charter member and honorary campaign chairwoman, Mrs. Dot Wyatt, in honor of her late husband John. The campaign is also led by chairs, Mrs. Joan Allen and Mr. Harvey Wright. 2011 The Wyatt Visitors Pavilion complex openes as a milestone which will elevate and expand the Garden's abilities to serve visitors and community. Today, over twenty-five years later, the Garden encompasses 80 acres of pine and hardwood forest, and boasts meticulously preserved natural areas of the region's indigenous plants, trees and wildlife. The cultivated garden areas showcase more than 2,000 varieties of ornamental plants, and include our renowned Daylily, Camellia and Hosta gardens. The River Walk, Heritage Garden, Children's Garden and Butterfly Stroll provide unique educational experiences for young and old alike.
