Another Famous North Carolinian... er Famous North Carolinian George Younce Southern Gospel Singer George Younce Southern Gospel Singer George Wilson Younce was born on February 22, 1930 in Patterson, North Carolina. He passed away at the age of 75 in Akron, Ohio on April 11, 2005. He was active from 1946 to 2005 as a bass voice with The Cathedral Quartet and Old Friends Quartet. He was the youngest child of four children. In 1936 the Younce family moved to Lenoir, North Carolina. At the age of 15 in his hometown, George received his fi rst taste of Southern Gospel music. As a teenager, he joined his fi rst quartet. When his voice changed, he switched to the bass part that he would sing for the rest of his life.
