FAYETTEVILLE faces OF RICK HOUP, CEO, YMCA OF THE SANDHILLS Houp has been a local resident for four years. Some of his favorite things about living here are meandering down Hay Steet to all the local restaurants and the downtown businesses. He enjoys visiting coffee shops, catching a movie at the Cameo, 4th Fridays, concerts in Festival Park and he enjoys exploring North Carolina with his wife, Lisa. In his spare time, he taps into his creative side, playing the guitar and enjoying music. Some of his top band picks? He loves going old school with Dave Matthews Band, but also likes the sound of Artisan Authors and Mumford & Sons. The Fayetteville YMCA has recently expanded its services to include outlying counties – like Carolina Lakes and Anderson Creek – the Girls on the Run program is also expanding to Robeson County, and there are talks with Moore Co. to build a YMCA as well as to expand collaborations with local organizations. GAVIN SHUEY, PARK RANGER, MAZARICK PARK Gavin Shuey is the Park Ranger for Mazarek Park and has worked for the city for 18 years, residing in Fayetteville for 27 years. As a Park Ranger, he enjoys coordinating the environmental education programs which include scout badge activity programs along with fishing programs. Shuey said in his down time he likes to hit the local parks for a picnic and take a hike. A recent hobby that has blossomed into a business has been selling his metal, plastic or resin soldiers that he paints. His largest orders are clients overseas and in Germany. JENNIFER HANES SULLIVAN, DIRECTOR, CAPE FEAR BOTANICAL GARDENS Jennifer Sullivan has resided in Fayetteville for six years and serves as the Director for the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens. She says the most fun part of her job is seeing visitors of all ages enjoy the Garden and then telling us they never knew something like this was in Fayetteville. In her spare time she enjoys traveling, running, and enjoying the company of her two dogs - Molly and Gracie. Wondering what's on her iPod? The Avett Brothers, Ryan Adams, Civil Wars, and Bob Dylan. Her favorite read as of late? "Any Pat Conroy book, but the one I read most recently was "The Great Santini," she said. CityViewNC.com | 69
