editors' corner Chill Out M Rebekah Sanderlin, senior editor read the full story by me and Melissa Collins. These hospitable women with their truly green thumbs gave me all the answers I needed to get my hydrangeas and orchids to thrive, and I saw that the roots of these friendships go deeper than the oldest oak tree in town. While trips to the beach are synonymous with summer, so are cool treats, like frozen yo- S ummer is in full effect and that means you've already enjoyed harvesting those variegated garden tomatoes and other veggies. I had the privilege of meet- ing the ladies of the Pines Garden Club at their 50th Anniversary soiree and it was everything I had hoped it would be; experience it for yourself though as you gurt and other cold libations, particularly our North Carolina-brewed beer. Read the story on page 55 to get an educational look behind the scenes and meet the brewmasters here in Fayetteville who turn barley and hops into tasty summer inspired concoctions. As the war ebbs and flows, adversely affecting many in our town, it was comforting to her perfectly set hair never fell, not even when it was 99 in the shade with 100 percent hu- midity. Some people truly were made to live in the south. I love the south and you won't hear me complain about the heat, or the humidity. It is what it is, and right now it's summer, my favorite season. But there are times when a sun- dress, a fan, or air conditioning isn't enough to bring down my body temperature and even a summer lover like me needs a break from the heat. That's when a mental reset button is in order, something to get me thinking chilly thoughts. This issue of CityView is intended to be exactly that sort of reset. It's chock full of stories and pictures that are designed to take you readers to a breezier place, a place with cold beer, ice sculptures, swim teams and frozen yogurt ... you're cooling off already, right? And, though there's plenty to do in Fayetteville in the summer time, we'd be remiss if we didn't at least acknowledge all the traffic on Highway 87 every weekend, with people from our fair city heading to the beach. Short of having stories about the Arctic and penguins, we've done our best to help you cool off. So kick back (preferably with that hammock and that glass of sweet tea on our cover) and enjoy summer and this issue of CityView. y southern grandmother was one of those who insisted that ladies don't sweat, they glisten. She obviously never went to the gym with me. She also managed to always smell like White Shoulders bath powder and Shalimar perfume even when the rest of us were glistening like pigs; and find out about volunteers and medical providers in our community stepping up to help the Give an Hour program, which bridges the gap in mental health services. Likewise, the USO and all who support it have been helping troops here and elsewhere for generations. The final story in our three-part USO series is in this issue. I'm proud to belong to a community of citizens, businesses, churches, schools and everyday people who honor the sacrifices made by our soldiers and their families.
