ByTerrySpencer The Associated Press FORT MYERS, FLA. Gun- fire erupted at a nightclub hosting a swimsuit-themed party for teens in Florida, leaving two teens dead and at least 17 other peo- ple wounded, officials said Monday. It was not immediately clear what triggered the vi- olence, but authorities said theshootingwasnotanactof terror. Police detained three people and were searching for others, interim Police Chief Dennis Eads said. The slain teens were 14-year-old Sean Archilles and 18-year-old Stef'an Strawder, police said. Ar- chilles lived about a mile from the nightclub, and loved to play football and basketball, said his father, Jean Archilles. "He liked to make peo- ple laugh. He's a funny kid. He's always joking," Jean Archilles said. Strawder starred on the basketball team for Le- high High School, averag- ing more than 15 points a game as a junior, according to The News-Press. "Everyone was afraid to play against him because he was so good. He would guide you and give you ad- vice on how to step up your game and how to guard him and things like that," said 16-year-old Peyton Hebon, who started playing against Strawder in travel basket- ball leagues in sixth grade. Strawder was always pos- itive and energetic and was unstoppable on the court, Hebon said. Four people were in the hospital. Two were in crit- ical condition and two in fair condition, said Lisa Sgarlata, the chief admin- istrative officer at Lee Me- morial Health System. All of the other patients were treated and released. The victims ranged in ages from 12 to 27. "It's horrible when these things happen," Gov. Rick Scott said at an afternoon news conference. He noted that the state is currently seeing a 45-year low in the crime rate. There were two active crime scenes — the club and a street in the area, which also remained closed as po- lice investigated. The club is in a strip mall that includes a day- care center and is across the street from a large apart- ment complex. The shoot- ing happened about 12:30 a.m. Monday, just as the club was closing and par- ents were arriving to pick up their children. Syreeta Gary told WFTX- TV her daughter ran to avoid being shot. Her daughter was OK, but her daughter's friend "got hit in the leg and luckily it's just her leg," she said. "Her dodging bullets and running, dropping in be- tween cars, it's ridiculous that these kids have to go through this," Gary said. "Theycan'tenjoythemselves because you have other peo- ple that have criminalistic minds and they just want to terrorize things." By Melinda Deslatte The Associated Press BATON ROUGE, LA. Baton Rouge police officer Mon- trell Jackson's pleas for the city to unite and "don't let hate infect your heart" echoed Monday through- out the funeral service that grieved a man who only four months earlier had been celebrating the birth of his son. Jackson wrote those words days before he was shot to death, in a Facebook post that described the dif- ficulties of being both a black man and a police of- ficer. His younger brother, Kedrick Pitts, repeated the words again at Jackson's fu- neral. "All I wanted to do was be like you," Pitts said, speak- ing to his brother. "Now I can brag about you being an angel." Then, he told the over- flowing church: "God bless you all. Don't let hate infect your heart." A 10-year veteran of the police force, Jackson and two other law enforcement officers were killed July 17 by a masked gunman who officials say appeared to be targeting police. Jackson was the last of the three to be buried. Thousands packed the church in north Baton Rouge for a two-and-a-half- hour service celebrating the 32-year-old corporal in joy- ful singing and dancing mixed with tearful memo- ries. His flag-draped black casket, striped with a po- lice officer's blue, bore the Superman logo, a nod to his wife's calling Jackson "her Superman." Mourners described Jackson as a loyal friend, an officer who loved his city and a proud father of his 4-month-old son Mason. Before the funeral, hun- dreds of law enforcement officers from around the country streamed past the casket, some solemnly sa- luting and others making the sign of the cross. Baton Rouge residents have been mourning at a series of memorial and fu- neral services since Jack- son, police officer Matthew Gerald, 41, and East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff's dep- uty Brad Garafola, 45, were killed in a July 17 shootout with former Marine, Gavin Long. Long's attack came af- ter the shooting death of a black man, Alton Sterling, by white police officers sparked protests around the city. Police say they don't know if Long was respond- ing to that death, but they say he deliberately targeted officers.
