The driver, identified as 57-year-old Teresa Richardson of Medford, Oregon, was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Redding with major in- juries, according to a CHP press release. Richardson was driving her 1998 Toyota Ta- coma pickup south in the fast lane at an unknown speed when, according to witness statements, the vehicle had a catastrophic failure. Richardson lost control of the vehicle, which veered right, went up an embankment and over- turned, landing on its roof and trapping her in- side, the release said. Emergency personnel were still working to ex- tricate her about 5:40 p.m., according to the CHP website. Traffic was temporarily backed up with the center divider and slow lane blocked at 5:28 p.m. and units from the CHP Cottonwood In- spection Facility were asked to run traffic breaks about 5:30 p.m. Richardson was wearing her seat belt. Drugs and alcohol were not considered as contributing factors to the crash. Initial reports at 5:19 p.m. put the crash near the Bowman Road off-ramp, just north of Auc- tion Yard, according to the California Highway Patrol website. By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter CORNING The AmVets Car Show held Saturday at the Corning Veterans Memorial Hall nearly tripled in size in just its second year. The show was held to help connect people to the veterans organization and proceeds will help veterans. Chris Morel of Reno, Ne- vada was by far the furthest from home with his Nitro Funny Car that can go as fast as 290 mph, although he has only had it as high as 260 mph. He uses the car in exhibition racing and came to the Corning show after being invited by a veteran. "We had 38 cars," Am- Vets Post Commander and show coordinator Kevin Benson Sr. said. "I'm ex- tremely happy with the turnout. This is awesome. Anyone who comes out and sits in this weather has got my vote for favorite vehicle. I'm like a little kid looking at all these cars." Vehicles came from as far as Redding, Chico, Paradise and one vehicle from as far away as Sacramento, Benson said. While Tehama resident Ron Warner's 1929 DeSoto DeLugo, with its rumble seat — commonly known in the south as Mother-In-Law Seat — was the oldest vehi- cle present, there was one from 1931. Tehama County Supervi- sor Burt Bundy of Los Moli- nos, who also came last year, brought his 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air. He said he likes the show and enjoyed seeing all the nice cars at the event. Corning Mayor Gary Strack was on hand with his 1939 V-8 pickup, which is "an F-100 before they called them F-100s," he said. He bought the vehicle mostly already restored about five years ago. "I saw it when I took my wife to a doctor's appoint- ment so I dropped her off and said I'm going back to look at it," Strack said. "This is a great show to have and to have it benefit our veterans is great for the city. I'm glad to seemorepeoplethisyearand hope it continues to grow." An awards show was held at 3 p.m. followed by a dance at 7 p.m. Results from the show will be published when received. CORNING AMVETS CAR SHOW NEARLY TRIPLES VEHICLES By Julie Zeeb Jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Tehama County District Attorney Gregg Cohen confirmed Sunday evening that Red Bluff City Councilman Suren Patel was arrested Saturday in Florida on a Tehama County District Attorney warrant. Patel, who has been on the City Council since 2014, was arrested in connection with an investiga- tion into fraud first reported in a May 14, 2015 article involving Patel's position in management of America's Best Value Inn on South Main Street. That inves- tigation had been underway for about six weeks at the time the article initially ran. "Suren Patel was arrested on our warrant in Florida as he was leaving the country, bound for the Caribbean I believe," Cohen said. The estimate of public funds alleged to be mis- appropriated is about $20,000, Cohen said. Patel will be brought back to Tehama County unless he waives extradition, Cohen said. "(Patel) will appear in court in Florida," said Eric Clay, chief investigator of the District At- torney's office. "He can waive extradition, which means he will be transported here to face the charges or he can fight extradition, which then means (the district attorney's office) and Florida have to prove he is the person on the warrant. Once that's proven then he will be transported here to face the charges." Patel will have to travel by multiple busses from Florida to Red Bluff, Cohen said. At a press conference on the matter Monday, Cohen said if Patel is convicted of the charges, particularly seven counts of misappropriating money, he would never be able to hold public of- fice again.
