A new television series aims to unveil the truth about the tu- multuous time that shaped the nation's people and places. Robert Redford ("Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," 1969) and Stephen David ("Redrum") bring viewers a historical look at the era in "The American West," airing a new episode Saturday, July 23, on AMC. Set between the years 1865 to 1890, the show ex- plores how the United States was transformed in the after- math of the Civil War. "The series will allow view- ers the opportunity to explore an era of famous outlaws and lawmen who shaped American history, connected through a larger story that's never been told in this way," explained Da- vid in an official release. Billed as a docuseries, the eight-part television event takes a look at the personal lives and little-known tales of western legends such as Jesse James (David H. Stevens, "Punch-Drunk Love," 2002), Billy the Kid (Derek Chariton, "Losing It"), Wyatt Earp (Jona- than C. Stewart, "The Making of the Mob: New York"), Crazy- horse (newcomer Will Strong- heart) and Sitting Bull (Mo Brings Plenty, "Comanche Warrior"). In addition to dramatic re- enactments of their stories, "The American West" features interviews with notable stars from the western genre. Some of the actors featured include James Caan ("The Godfather," 1972), Burt Reynolds ("Smokey and the Bandit," 1977), Tom Selleck ("Magnum, P.I."), Kiefer Sutherland ("24"), Mark Harmon ("NCIS") and Ed Harris ("Pollock," 2000), as well as Redford himself. All of the aforementioned actors rose to prominence thanks to their roles in western movies and TV shows, but none so famously as Redford. His work in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" opposite Paul Newman ("The Sting," 1973) solidified his status as a true Hollywood A-lister, even before there was an A-list. Red- ford, of course, broke out of the western genre and went on to appear in, direct and produce some of the most memorable movies of our time, including "Ordinary People" (1980), "Out of Africa" (1985) and "Quiz Show" (1994), winning an Oscar, three Golden Globes and SAG's Lifetime Achieve- ment Award in 1995. Ten years later, he received the Kennedy Center Honors for his contribu- tion to American culture. While Redford needs no in- troduction, TV fans may not be immediately familiar with Da- vid, but he's proven he's a force to be reckoned with in the tele- vision industry. Before estab- lishing his own production and post-production company — Stephen David Entertainment — he was part of the original team behind NBC's "The Ap- prentice," and also worked on CBS's mega-hit "Survivor." An accomplished screenwriter, he's also had a hand in such se- ries as TLC's "Big Medicine," A&E's "God or the Girl" and History's "The Men Who Built America." His work in "Sons of Liberty" earned him a nomina- tion for a Writers Guild of America Award. David has worked with AMC before, in the award-winning "Making of the Mob" series. Together, David and Redford are continuing a well-estab- lished western tradition on AMC, which has become home to a number of western pro- grams over the years, both new and old. The cable channel has been attracting fans of the genre for years with rebroad- casts of classic series and mov- ies such as "The Rifleman" and "Hondo" (1953). AMC has even dabbled in the genre with its own original, "Hell on Wheels," which airs immedi- ately prior to "The American West" on Saturday evenings. "Hell on Wheels," which serves as the perfect lead-in to the do- cuseries, chronicles the life of Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount, "Tully," 2000), a former Confederate soldier working on the first transcontinental railroad. AMC may seem like a great fit now, but "The American West" was initially supposed to air on Discovery. In 2014, the Sundance Productions program was retooled and moved to AMC when the cable channel ordered it straight to series. That was a big vote of confidence for the series, which has earned mixed re- views from critics up to that point. Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times appreciated the fresh focus on re-enactments compared to other documen- tary style programs, while Rob Lowman of the Los Angeles Daily News felt "The American West" was "more entertain- ment than insightful." As of press time, the show held a seven out of 10 rating on IMdb.com. Anyone wondering where to find the rugged scenery seen in "The American West" should check out West Virginia's Berkeley and Jefferson coun- ties, as well as Prickett's Fort State Park in Marion County, where the show is predomi- nantly filmed. The untouched landscapes easily transport viewers back to the days after the Civil War, days that shaped modern America. 'The American West' takes a historical look at the wild west Featurestory
