This is an annual contest sponsored by the Griffi th Rutherford Chapter to promote citizenship and patriotism. The National contest's theme for the 2015-2016 school year was "Celebrate America". Six hundred and nineteen entries were submitted this year from 679 students in third through eighth grades from public, private and charter schools in Rutherford County. The types of categories for entry submission included individual and group entries. The individual entries included designing a stamp, drawing a poster, writing a poem, writing a short story, and producing a photo essay. While conducting and producing a report on a community service entry could be both an individual or group entry, producing a banner required at least groups of three entrants. The 21 fi rst place winning entries, produced by 24 students, at the State JAC contest level were then sent to the Southeast Division level for further judging during the late winter. There entries were judged against entries from students winning in the seven southeastern states. At this level of judging, local contestants' entries received nine fi rst place, two second place, four third place and two honorable mention awards. In early spring, those nine fi rst place winners' entries were sent on to the National JAC Contest judges where they competed against the winners from the other US Divisions of DAR JAC Contest in their particular categories. The Griffi th Rutherford Chapter had eight of its nine fi rst place Southeast Division winners win awards at the National JAC level of judging. The three National fi rst place winning entries included Shai Johnson, a fourth grade student at Rutherfordton Elementary School, for her poster illustrating celebrating America; Emma Lineberger, a fi fth grade student at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, for her poem; and Frank Conigliaro, an eighth grade student at East Rutherford Middle School, for his poem. The two National second place winners were Isaac Rollins, a fi fth grade student at Forrest W. Hunt Elementary School, who completed a photo essay, and Mayland Maxwell, a fi fth grade student at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, who wrote a short story about celebrating America. The three National third place winners from Rutherford County included Ariana Reese, a fourth grade student from Rutherfordton Elementary School, for her poem, Harlee Southerland, a third grade student at Forest City Dunbar Elementary School, for her stamp design on celebrating America, and Chelsea Carpenter, an eighth grade student at East Rutherford Middle School, for her photo essay.
