4 "I was deeply committed to the whole concept of fraternity and brotherhood, especially as an undergraduate," Mark says. "It was very difficult to leave that, and I found myself looking for other opportunities to have that con- nectedness." This led him to reach out to the nation- al organization to see how he could get involved. He became a part of several committees, which turned into bigger roles. At the national level, he has served as Grand Chapter Advisor, Grand Province Chief, Grand Council- or, Grand Marshal, and Grand Senior President. This experience allowed Mark not only to make a difference for Alpha Sigma Phi, but also to discover how strong the brotherhood is. "I have the ability to go to any city and meet Alpha Sigs who share the same ritual, values, and experiences, even though we're from different colleges," Mark says. "Alpha Sigs are Alpha Sigs, no matter what chapter. You have an instant family, connections, and support." Mark encourages other alumni and undergraduates to take full advantage of the fraternity and get involved at regional and national levels as well. He believes that the more you invest in the fraternity, the more you will get out of it. "Being initiated into Alpha Sigma Phi made me the man I am, and I would have been a very different person with a very different professional path if not for my association with Alpha Sigma Phi. I was and am proud to be a part of an organization founded upon values I am aligned with and a purpose that is a positive influence in men's lives." Mark and his wife Kathleen live in Sunriver, Oregon. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking, cycling, flying, and reading. His e-mail is markstill72@ gmail.com. MU'S UNINTERRUPTED LEGACY EXTENDS MORE THAN 100 YEARS! For over a century, Alpha Sigma Phi has been a proud and respected member of the University of Washington campus community. Since our founding in 1912, hundreds of young men have bonded as brothers and learned to live lives of excellence. Mu Chapter continues to grow both in numbers and in stature. We now have more than 107 active undergraduate members and over 1,100 active alumni. I think most of us would agree that Mu Chapter has had a significant impact on our lives, both during and after our time at Washington. Because we build such strong friendships as brothers, we all leave Mu Chapter with high hopes of keeping our fraternal bonds intact. Unfortunately, we quickly find that many new inter- ests—careers, families, and civic activities—can create valid diversions. The day-to-day activities of life take over and, before you know it, we fall out of touch and begin to wonder what happened to our brothers. Without a solid alumni relations program in place, our members lack the means for staying connected to the fraternity. NEW ALUMNI PROGRAM DESIGNED TO HELP KEEP MEMBERS IN TOUCH With this in mind, our new alumni relations program is designed to help our members stay in touch and to cultivate awareness and involvement in our Mu Chapter. Twice a year we will be mailing Musings magazine, focused on communication with alumni. Each issue will contain alum- ni news, spotlights on alumni from various decades, information on upcoming events, and reports on chapter activities. We want to give you an opportunity to reach out to brothers you haven't seen or talked to for far too long, and we hope this will encourage you to reconnect with them. In addition to Musings we will send a biographical update requesting alumni to verify the contact information we have on file. Many of you have already received this mailing and we encourage you to return it to us as soon as you can. These biographical updates play a vital role in maintaining our records and enhance our ability to facilitate meaningful relationships within our alumni community. They also allow us to collect information for the alumni news section of Musings. YOU, AS AN ALUMNUS OF MU CHAPTER, ARE IMPORTANT While learning about our own pledge brothers and alumni, it also is important for all of us to stay informed about the collegiate chapter and hear about what our younger brothers are accomplish- ing. These stories will encourage you to lend your support to Alpha Sigma Phi and help our young men remain leaders on campus and in the community. With this new communications program, our goal is to keep all alumni informed about current projects and future plans, and to give all of our University of Washington brothers an opportunity to get involved. Hopefully, our efforts will remind you that we are all brothers for life, not just during our college years.
